The Shawshank Redemption

You know some birds are not meant to be caged, their feathers are just too bright.

There is something inside, that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours.

Selected Scene l :

Rsd: And that's how it came to pass, that on the second-to-last day of the job, the convict crew that tarred the plate factory roof in the spring of 1949 wound up sitting in a row at ten o'clock in the morning, drinking icy cold Bfack Label beer, courtesy of the hardest screw that ever walked a turn at Shawshank State Prison.

Hadley: Drink up while it's cold, fadies.

Red: The colossal prick even managed to sound magnanimous. We sat and drank with the sun on our shoulders, and felt like free men. Hell, We could've been tarring the roof of one of our own houses.

W6 were the lords of all creation. As for Andy, he spent that break hunkered in the shade, a strange little smile on his face, watching us drink his beer.

Heywood: Want a cold one Andy ?

Andy: No thanks. I gave up drinking.

Red: You could argue he'd done it to curry favor with the guards, Or maybe make a few friends among us cons. Me, I think he did it just to feel normal again,. if only for a short while.

Selected Scene 2 :

Red: I have no idea to this day what those two In ladies were singin'about. Truth is, I don't want to know, Some things are best left unsaid. I like to think they were singin'about something so beautiful it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared. Higher and farther that anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away... and for the briefest of moments-every last man at Shawshank felt free. It pissed the warden off something awful.

Warden: Open the door. Open it up! Dufrense, open this door! Turn that offl I am warning you, Dufrense, turn that off!

Hadley: Dufrense, you are mine now.

Red: Andy got to weeks in the hole for that¨ittle stunt.

Hadlen: On your feet.

Con l: Hey, look who's here.

Con 2: Maestro

Hey wood: You, you couldn't plaY somethin'good, huh ? Like Hank Williams ?

Andy: They broke the door down before I could take requests.

Floyd : Was it worth two weeks in the hole ?

Andy: Easiest time I ever did.

Heywood: Oh, shit. No such thing as easy time in the hole A week in the hole is like a year.

Snooze: Damn straight.

Andy: I had Mr. Mozart to keep me company.

Red: So they let you tote that record player down there, huh ?

Andy: It was in here... in here. That's the beauty of music. They can't get that from you. Haven't you ever felt that way about music ?

Red: Well I pfayed a mean harmonica as a younger man Lost my interest in it, though. Didn't make much sense in here.

Andy: Here 's where it makes most sense. You need it so you don 't forget.

Red: Forget?

Andy: ForgBt that there are places in the world that aren 't made out of stone, that there's.. there's something inside that they can't get to and they can't touch. That's yours.

Red: What are you talking about ?

Andy: Hope.

Red: Hope. Let me tell you something, my friend. Hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane. lt's got no use on the inside. You 'd better get used to the idea.

Andy: Like Brooks did ?

Selected Scene 3 :

Red : He's got his fingers in a tot of pies, from what I hear.

Andy: What you hear isn't half of it. He's got scams you haven't dreamed of. Kickbacks on his kickbacks. There's a river of dirty money flowing through this ptace.

Red: Can be a problem having all that money. 'Cause sooner or (ater you ' re gotta have to explain where it came from.

Andy: That's where I come in. I channel it,fiIter it, funnel it... stocks, securities, taxfree municipals., t send that money out into the real world. And when it comes back.

Red : Clean as a virgin 's honeybunch ?

Andy: Cleaner. By the time Norton retires, I will have made him a millionaire.

Red: If they ever catch on him, he's gonna wind up here Wearing a number himself.

Andy: Oh Red, I thought you had a little more faith in me than that.

Red: I know you're good, but all that paper leaves a trail. Now anybody gets curious, FBI, IRS, whatever. lt's going to lead to somebody.

Andy: Sure it is. But not to me~ and certainly not to the warden.

Red: Allright, who?

Andy: RandaIIStevens.

Red: Who?

Andy: The "silent" silent partner. He's the guilty one~ your Honor.

The man with the bank accounts. lt's where the filtering process starts. They trace anything, it 's gonna lead to him.

Red: But who is he ?

Andy: He's a phantom, an apparition. Second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit, ( off Red's look ) I conjured him out of thin air. He doesn't exist... except on paper.

Red: Andy, you can't just make a person up.

Andy: Sure you can. if you know how the system works, and where the cracks are. lt's amazing what you can accomplish by mail.

Mr. Stevens has a birth certificate, driver's license, social security number.

Red: You ' re shitting me.

Andy: lf they aver trace any of those accounts, they'II wind up chasing a figment of my imagination.

Red: Well,l,II be damnedl Did I say you were good 7 Shit! You're Rembrandt.

Andy: The funny thing is on the outside, I was an honest man.

Strarght as an arrow. I had to come to prison to be a crook.

Red : What the hell's going on ?

Snooze: You tell me, One second he was fine, then out came the knife.

Red: Brooks, Brooks, we can talk about this right ?

Brooks: Nothing left to taIk about! lt's damn all talked out! l'm gonna kill him, cut his throat!

Red: Hey, wait, wait! What's he done to you ?

Brooks: lt's what they donel I got, I got no choicel

Andy: Brooks, you're not gonna hurt Heywood, we all know that.

Even Heywood knows it, right Heywood ?

Heywood: Sure I know that. Sure.

Andy: You know why you're not gonna hurt him ?8ecause he's a friend of yours, because Brooks Hatlen is a reasonable man.

Red: That's right. That's rightl Is that right, guys t?

Andy: So put the knife cfown. Brooks, Brooks, look at me. Put the knife down Brooks, look at his neck, for God's sake. Look at his neck. He 's bleeding.

Brooks: But it's the only 'Nay.. the only way they'd let me stay.

Andy: This is crazy. Come oti. You don 't wanna do this. Put it down.Look at me. Take it easy. You 'lI be all right.

Heywood: Him ? What about me Crazy old foot! Goddamn near cut my throat!

Red: You 've had it worse from shaving. What the hell did you do to set him off anyway ?

Heywood: I didn't do nothin'! Just came in to say fare-thee-wetl. Ain 't you heard ? His paroce came through!

Andy: I just don't understand what happened in there, that's all.

Heywood: old man's crazy as a rat in a tin shithouse, is what.

Red: Heywood, that's enough out of you.

Con: I heard he had you shitting your pants.

Heywood: Fuckyou!

Red: You do knock it off! Brooks ain 't no bug. He 's just... he 's just institutionalized.

Heywood: Institutionelized, my ass.

Red: The man's been in here fifty years. Heywood, fifty yearsl This is all he knows. In here, he's an important man He's an educated man. Outside, he's nothing but a used-up con with arthritis in both hands.Ply couldn 't get a librarY card if he tried.

You know what l'm trying to say ?

Floyd: Red, I do believe you ' re talking out of your ass'.

Red: You believe whatever you want, Floyd. But l'm telling you these walls are funny. First you hate 'em, then you get used to'em.

Enough time passes, you get so you depend on 'em. That's "institutionalized" .

Jigger: Shit. I could never get (ike that.

Ernie: Oh, yeah ? Say that whan you've been here as long as Brooks has.

Red: Goddamn right, They send you here for life, and that's exactly what they take. Pact that counts, anyway.

Selected Scene 5:

Andy: My wife used to say l'm a hard man to know Like a closed book. Complained about it all the time. She's beautiful. God, I loved her. But I just didn't know how to show it, that's all. I killed her, Red. I didn't pull the trigger. But f drove her away, That's why she died Because of meJ the way I am.

Red: That doesn't make you a murderer. Bad husband, maybe. Felt bad about it if you want to. But you didn 't pull the trigger,

Andy: No. I didn't. Somebody else did, and I wound up in here Bad luck, I guess.

Red: Yeah.

Andy: It floats around. Has to land on somebody. It was my turn, that's aU I was in the path of the tornado'. I didn't expect the storm would last as long as it has. You think you 'II ever get out of here ?

Red: Me ? Yeah. One day when I got a long, white beard and two or three marbles rotling around upstairs. They 'II let me out.

Andy:Ten you where l'd go. Zihuatanejo.

Red: Zihua...?

Andy: Zihuatanejo. lt's in r,Aexico. A little place on the Pacific Ocean. You know what the Mexicans say about the Pacific ? They say it has no memory. That's where t want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memocY. Op8n up a little hote! right on the beach. Buy some worthless old boat and fix it up new. Take my guests out charter fishing.

Red : Zihuatanejo ?

Aridy: in a ptace like that, f could use a man that knows how to get things.

Red: I don't think I could make it on the outside, Andy. l've been in here most of my life. l'm an institutional man now. Just like Brooks was.

Andy: Well, you underestimate yourself.

Red: I don't think so. In here l'm the guy who can get things for Vou, sure but outside all you need is the Yellow Pages. Hell, I wouldn't even know where to begin. Pacific Ocean ? Shit! About to scare me to death, somethin'that big.

Andy: Not me. I didn't shoot my wife and I didn't shoot her lover, and whatever mistakes I made l've paid for them and then some. That hotel, that boat... I don 't think that's too much to ask.

Red: I don't think you ought'o be doing this to yourself, Andy This is shitty pipB dreamsl I mean Mexico's in the way the hell down there, and you're in hera, and that's the way it is!

Andy: Yeah, right. That's the way it is. lt's down there, and l'm in here. I guess it comes down to a simple choice, really. Get busy living... or get busy dying.
