敵對的兩兄弟

Young Jimmy Henderson was always a bit of an optimist.

年輕的吉米·亨德森一直是一個準樂觀者。

No task was too onerous for him, and even the onset of some serious illness or other-and he suffered from many during his childhood—could ever get him down.

對他來說沒有任何工作是繁重不堪的，即使某些嚴重的疾病發(fā)作也不能使他倒下—他孩提時代就經(jīng)歷過好幾場惡疾。

One time, for example, he had a serious infection of his optical nerves, which almost left him blind.

比方說，有一次他的視覺神經(jīng)就曾經(jīng)受到過嚴重感染，差點使他雙目失明。

Even as the pus was oozing out of his eyes, he never omitted any chance to tell a good joke or two.

但甚至當膿水滲出他的眼睛時，他都不放過講一個或兩個笑話的機會。

That infection left his cornea quite opaque for a while, but no matter!

那一次感染曾經(jīng)一度讓他的角膜交得模糊不透明，但是這不礙事！

Jimmy was the total opposite of his younger brother Harry, who would turn out to be the biggest opponent in his life.

吉米的性格和他的弟弟哈里完全相反，哈里將會是他這一生當中最大的對手。

Whatever it was Jimmy did, Harry would be opposed to it.

不管吉米做什么，哈里肯定會提出反對意見。

Their rivalry and disagreements were ongoing, and their relationship was certainly much less than optimal. Onslaught followed upon onslaught.

他們的這種敵對爭執(zhí)狀態(tài)一直都在進行，當然，他們之間的關(guān)系也決不會是最理想的兄弟關(guān)系。一次猛攻以后總會有另一次猛攻。

Whatever it was Jimmy wanted to do—whether it was going to the opera or anything else—Harry would make an opposite choice.

吉米想做的任何事情—不管是去聽歌還是干別的—哈里總會有相反的選擇。

Many people were wondering how it was that two such opposing forces could be members of one and the same family.

很多人都覺得奇怪，這兩種如此對立的勢力怎么可能同時在一個家庭里共存？

On account of his childhood problems, Jimmy decided that we would choose a profession where he might help others with eye problems, by choosing to become either an optometrist or an optician.

鑒于童年的遭遇，吉米立志選擇一個能幫助他人解決眼睛疾患的職業(yè)，比如說當一個驗光師或者是一個眼鏡商。

Either of those would be an optimum choice, he thought, but even in this matter his brother voiced his strong opposition.

在他看來，這兩種職業(yè)都是最適宜的選擇，但即使是在這個問題上他的弟弟都提出了強烈的反對意見。
