Chapter 11 Camp Kookooskoos

第十一章 庫(kù)庫(kù)斯庫(kù)斯夏令營(yíng)

Camp Kookooskoos was on a small lake, deep in thewoods of Ontario.

庫(kù)庫(kù)斯庫(kù)斯夏令營(yíng)座落在安大略森林深處的一個(gè)小湖邊。

There were no summer cottages on the lake, nooutboard motors, no roads with cars rushing by.

這里沒(méi)有依湖而建的消夏別墅，沒(méi)有帶舷外發(fā)動(dòng)機(jī)的汽艇，也沒(méi)有供汽車驅(qū)駛的車道。

It was a wilderness lake, just right for boys.

這是一個(gè)荒野的湖，最適合男孩們來(lái)玩。

Mr. Beaver left Sam and Louis at the end of a dirt road,

比弗先生讓薩姆和路易斯在泥土路的盡頭下了車，

and they finished their journey to camp by canoe.

然后他們又乘上獨(dú)木舟，劃到了營(yíng)地，這才算結(jié)束了他們的旅程。

Sam sat in the stern and paddled, Louis stood in the bow and looked straight ahead.

一路上，薩姆坐在船尾劃槳，路易斯則只是站在船頭注視著前方。

The camp consisted of a big log cabin where everybody ate,

這個(gè)營(yíng)地由一個(gè)吃飯用的大木屋，

seven tents where the boys and the counselors slept,

七座供男孩與輔導(dǎo)員們睡覺(jué)的帳篷，

a dock out front, and a privy out back.

一個(gè)建在前面的船塢，一個(gè)蓋在后面的廁所組成。

The woods closed in all around, but there was a bare spot that had been made into a tenniscourt,

這里四周都為森林所環(huán)繞，其中只有一塊被用作網(wǎng)球場(chǎng)的開(kāi)闊地，

and there were plenty of canoes in which to take trips to other lakes.

還有一個(gè)堆放著許多可以獨(dú)木舟的地方，這些獨(dú)木舟是用來(lái)在別的湖上旅行的。

There were about forty boys.

這里大約有四十個(gè)男孩。

When Sam's canoe grounded on the sandy beach next to the camp dock,

Louis stepped ashore wearing his slate, his chalk pencil, and his trumpet.

About twenty boys rushed down to the landing to see what was going on.

碼頭上跑來(lái)大約二十個(gè)男孩，都想看看發(fā)生了什么事情。

They could hardly believe their eyes.

眼前的一切讓他們幾乎不能相信他們的眼睛了。

"Hey, look what's here!" one of the boys yelled.

“嘿，看那是什么!”一個(gè)男孩叫。

"A bird!" cried another. "Look at the size of him!"

“一只鳥(niǎo)!”另一個(gè)說(shuō)。“瞧他的個(gè)頭兒!”

Everybody crowded around Louis, wanting to get a close look at the new camper.

每個(gè)人都擠到了路易斯的周圍，想更清楚地瞧瞧這位新?tīng)I(yíng)員。

Sam had to push some of the boys back, to keep Louis from getting crushed.

薩姆把幾個(gè)男孩推開(kāi)，不讓路易斯被他們擠著。

"Take it easy, will you?" Sam implored.

“慢點(diǎn)來(lái)，好嗎?”薩姆懇求。

That evening after supper, the director of the camp, Mr. Brickle,

那天晚飯后，夏令營(yíng)指導(dǎo)員布里克先生

built a big campfire in front of the main lodge.

在大木屋前生起了營(yíng)火。

The boys gathered around.

男孩們都圍聚在一起。

They sang songs and toasted marshmallows and swatted mosquitoes.

他們唱著歌，嚼著果汁軟糖，還猛拍蚊子。

Sometimes you couldn't understand the words of a song

有時(shí)，你根本聽(tīng)不清歌里唱的是什么，

because the boys sang with marshmallows in their mouths.

因?yàn)槟泻冊(cè)诔钑r(shí)嘴里還塞著果汁軟糖呢。

Louis did not join the group. He stood by himself at a little distance.

路易斯沒(méi)和他們?cè)谝黄?.他獨(dú)自站在一個(gè)離他們稍遠(yuǎn)的地方。
