Dropping his slate and his chalk pencil and histrumpet,

路易斯摘下他的石板，石筆和小號，

Louis splashed into the water and struck out,

跳到水里，

beating his wings and kicking with his great webbedfeet.

拍起翅膀，踢動著他那有蹼的大腳向前游去。

A swan, even in summer when he can't fly,

can scoot across the water at high speed.

Louis's powerful wings beat the air.

His feet churned the waves, as though he were running on top of the water.

In a moment he had passed all the boats.

片刻之間，他就超過了所有的小船。

When he reached Applegate, he quickly dove,

pointed his long neck between Applegate's legs,

then came to the surface with Applegate sitting on his back.

Cheers came from the people on the shore and in the boats.

Applegate clung to Louis's neck.

阿普爾蓋特抱著路易斯的脖子。

He had been saved in the nick of time.

他在緊要關(guān)頭得救了。

Another minute and he would have gone to the bottom.

再晚一分鐘的話，他就真的沉底了。

Water would have filled his lungs. He would have been a goner.

那時水將灌滿他的整個肺部。他就會完蛋了。

"Thank God!" shouted Mr. Brickle through his megaphone.

“感謝上帝!”布里克先生對著他的擴(kuò)音器大喊。

"Great work, Louis!

Camp Kookooskoos will never forget this day!

Louis didn't pay much attention to all the shouting.

路易斯沒怎么注意去聽這些喊叫。

He swam very carefully over to Sam's boat,

他小心地游到薩姆的船邊，

and Sam pulled Applegate into the boat and helped him into the stern seat.

薩姆把阿普爾蓋特拉上船，扶他坐到船尾的座位上。

"You looked pretty funny, riding a swan," Sam said.

“你騎天鵝的樣子真滑稽，”薩姆說，

"And you're lucky to be alive.

“你還能活著可全憑運氣。

You're not supposed to go out alone in a canoe."

But Applegate was too scared and wet to say anything.

可是阿普爾蓋特已經(jīng)嚇壞了，全身濕透的他，什么話都說不出來了。

He just sat and stared straight ahead, spitting water out of his mouth and breathing hard.

他只是坐在那里直勾勾地呆看著前方，吐著嘴里的水，拼命地喘氣。
