 　　They could practice their own religion and speak their own language, and in many ways they benefited from all the good things the Romans brought, such as roads.

　　他們可以保持自己的宗教并講自己的語(yǔ)言。是的，羅馬人也帶給他們各種各樣好的東西，尤其是羅馬人所修的路。

　　Many of these, splendidly paved, led out from Rome across the plains and over distant mountain passes to remote and inaccessible1 parts of the empire.

　　許多極好的、鋪石子的路從羅馬出發(fā)穿過(guò)平原越過(guò)最遙遠(yuǎn)的山隘。

　　It must be said that the Romans didn't build these roads out of consideration for the people living there.

　　羅馬人這樣做不見(jiàn)得是為了替遙遠(yuǎn)的地方的居民謀利益，

　　On the contrary, their aim was to send news and troops to all parts of the empire in the shortest possible time.

　　而是為了便于他們自己能夠相當(dāng)迅速地把軍隊(duì)和消息送達(dá)帝國(guó)的各個(gè)地區(qū)，

　　The Romans were superb engineers. Most impressive of all their works were their magnificent aqueducts.

　　羅馬人是出色的工程師。此外他們也善于修建實(shí)用的建筑物。

　　These brought water from distant mountains and carried it down through valleys and into the towns – clear, fresh water to fill innumerable fountains and bathhouses,

　　尤其是羅馬人鋪設(shè)了妙不可言的水管，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地從高山鋪進(jìn)山谷，鋪進(jìn)城市，于是城市里就有了許多清澈的水井和浴場(chǎng)，

　　so that Rome's provincial2 officials could enjoy all the comforts they were used to having at home.

　　好讓羅馬官員在異鄉(xiāng)也能享用到他們?cè)诩亦l(xiāng)慣于享用的東西。
