Last month, our English Department invited a localradio star to deliver a public lecture on the topic ofmedia influence on society. He described the tug ofwar that has been going on in recent years betweennewspapers on real live paper (my words for the old-fashioned way) and newspapers available on theInternet.

上個(gè)月，我們英語系邀請(qǐng)一位當(dāng)?shù)貜V播電臺(tái)的明星給我們來一次有關(guān)媒體對(duì)社會(huì)影響的演講。他描述了最近一些年老式的報(bào)紙和網(wǎng)絡(luò)報(bào)紙之間的競(jìng)爭(zhēng)。

Are old-fashioned newspapers only for us older folks? The majority of college students I knowappear to consider reading anything, not only newspapers (online or "live") as a chore. Mostseem to only read to pass exams.

老式報(bào)紙只適合于年歲大的人嗎?我認(rèn)識(shí)的大多數(shù)大學(xué)生將閱讀，不僅包括讀報(bào)紙(無論是在線的還是“現(xiàn)場(chǎng)報(bào)道的”)，視為累人的活。大多數(shù)人閱讀只是為了通過考試。

For me, the pleasures of reading a newspaper, as with reading a novel or a well-crafted poem,essay, or drama, are intricately connected with the pleasures of the human imagination. Peopleread newspapers for many reasons. Newspapers offer information, and they also cover a varietyof topics. But newspapers and reading in general can only add to our lives if we haveimaginations sufficiently fertile and copious to appreciate them.

對(duì)我來說，閱讀報(bào)紙的了卻和閱讀小說或是心編輯的詩，散文，喜劇，都與人們想象的樂趣復(fù)雜地聯(lián)系在一起。人們閱讀報(bào)紙有很多原因。報(bào)紙?zhí)峁┬畔?，也包含很多話題，如果我們需要豐富的想象力來欣賞報(bào)紙和閱讀，它們就會(huì)融入到我們的生活中。

Many tell me the Internet has already taken over the job of old time reading, but I should notworry young people will suffer from underdeveloped imaginations as a result. PowerPointpresentations, video games, text messaging, YouTube, and countless other high-techadvances keep young imaginations very much alive and growing. I hope so.

許多人告訴我，網(wǎng)絡(luò)已經(jīng)替代了老式的閱讀，但是我不應(yīng)該擔(dān)心這會(huì)導(dǎo)致年輕人的想象力得不到發(fā)展，PowerPoint展示，視頻游戲，短消息的發(fā)送，YouTube還有無數(shù)的高科技發(fā)展會(huì)使年輕人的想象力保持活躍并增長(zhǎng)。我希望如此。
