Father Mapple rose, and in a mild voice ofunassuming authority ordered the scatteredpeople to condense.

梅普爾神甫站了起來(lái),以一種謙遜的長(zhǎng)者的柔和聲氣,命令四散的人群聚攏來(lái)。

Star board gangway, there! side away to larboard-larboard gangway to starboard! Midships! midships!

右舷走道的,喂!靠向左舷...左舷走道的靠向右舷!靠中間來(lái),靠中間來(lái)!

There was a low rumbling of heavy sea-boots among the benches, and a still slighter shuffling ofwomen's shoes, and all was quiet again, and every eye on the preacher.

凳子間頓時(shí)發(fā)出一陣笨重的靴子的低沉的隆隆聲,和一陣更輕的女鞋的聲音,接著又是一片鴉靜,每只眼睛都望著那個(gè)傳道者。

He paused a little; then kneeling in the pulpit's bows, folded his large brown hands across hischest, uplifted his closed eyes, and offered a prayer so deeply devout that he seemed kneelingand praying at the bottom of the sea.

This ended, in prolonged solemn tones, like the continual tolling of a bell in a ship that isfoundering at sea in a fog-in such tones he commenced reading the following hymn; butchanging his manner towards the concluding stanzas, burst forth with a pealing exultation andjoy.

禱告過(guò)后,他以曳長(zhǎng)而莊嚴(yán)的聲調(diào),有如一只陷在迷霧的海上的船只那種不斷敲擊的鐘聲...他就以這種聲調(diào)朗誦起如下的圣詩(shī)來(lái);但是,行將結(jié)束的時(shí)候,他卻態(tài)度一變,突然迸發(fā)出一陣興高采烈的狂歡聲來(lái)...

大鯨的恐怖和肋骨,困我在陰森可怕中,神光普照的浪濤滾滾而過(guò),把我高高舉起,重重拋進(jìn)毀滅之都。

I saw the opening maw of hell, With endless pains and sorrows there; Which none but they thatfeel can tell-Oh, I was plunging to despair.

我見(jiàn)地獄大張著口,那兒有無(wú)邊苦痛愁傷;只有經(jīng)受過(guò)的人才會(huì)知道...啊,我正陷進(jìn)絕望深淵。
