And now the time of tide has come; the ship casts offher cables; and from the deserted wharf theuncheered ship for Tarshish, all careening, glides tosea. That ship, my friends, was the first of recordedsmugglers! the contraband was Jonah. But the searebels; he will not bear the wicked burden. Adreadful storm comes on, the ship is like to break.But now when the boatswain calls all hands tolighten her; when boxes, bales, and jars areclattering overboard; when the wind is shrieking, andthe men are yelling, and every plank thunders withtrampling feet right over Jonah's head; in all this raging tumult, Jonah sleeps his hideous sleep.He sees no black sky and raging sea, feels not the reeling timbers, and little hears he or heedshe the far rush of the mighty whale, which even now with open mouth is cleaving the seasafter him. Aye, shipmates, Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship-a berth in the cabinas I have taken it, and was fast asleep. But the frightened master comes to him, and shrieksin his dead ear, 'What meanest thou, O, sleeper! arise!' Startled from his lethargy by thatdireful cry, Jonah staggers to his feet, and stumbling to the deck, grasps a shroud, to look outupon the sea. But at that moment he is sprung upon by a panther billow leaping over thebulwarks. Wave after wave thus leaps into the ship, and finding no speedy vent runs roaringfore and aft, till the mariners come nigh to drowning while yet afloat. And ever, as the whitemoon shows her affrighted face from the steep gullies in the blackness overhead, aghast Jonahsees the rearing bowsprit pointing high upward, but soon beat downward again towards thetormented deep.

現(xiàn)在,潮水上來了;船一解纜,這只不愉快的船就離開那冷落無人的碼頭,船身完全側斜著,悄悄地駛向他施。那只船,朋友們,是第一只有記錄的走私船!違禁品就是約拿。但是大海反抗起來了;它不愿意背負這種邪惡的重擔。突然起了一陣嚇人的暴風雨,那只船就象要被沖破似的。但是,當水手長要大家都來卸箱籠。貨物和瓶瓶罐罐都唏哩嘩啦拋進海里;風在尖嘯,人們在狂喊,每塊船板都給人們踩得直在約拿的頭頂轟隆隆響,這樣大吵大鬧的這個時候,約拿還在做他的惡夢。他看不到漆黑的天際和洶涌的大洋,感覺不到那搖搖晃晃的船身,更聽不到也沒有注意到那條大鯨這時正在急奔前來,甚至已經是大張著嘴,破浪前進在追趕他了。哎,船友們,約拿已經給晃得縮在艙側里...就是在我上面說的睡艙里那只鋪位上熟睡著?？墒?那個嚇壞了的船主跑到他跟前來,直對著他那死人似的耳朵尖叫著,你這沉睡的人呵!怎么啦,起來呀!那聲慘叫把他從昏睡里嚇醒過來了,約拿搖搖擺擺地立起來,跌跌撞撞地摸上甲板,抓住一根護桅索,望著海上?？墒?就在這時,從舷墻上沖過來的,猶如一只巨豹似的狂濤直潑在他身上。浪潮就這樣后浪推前浪。不住地沖進船來,因為找不到可以迅速出水的地方,水就從船頭嘩啦啦地涌到船尾,狂奔猛流,直弄得船雖未沉,可是水手們卻差不多要給淹死了。這時候,從漆黑的上空那象在深溝巨壑里閃出驚惶的臉色的月光中,嚇得發(fā)呆的約拿看到了那支聳立在船頭斜桅,颼地高高往上翹起,但立刻又猛地往下一翻,落到驚險的深淵里。
