Tell Quohog to step along. By the great anchor,what a harpoon he's got there! looks like good stuffthat; and he handles it about right. I say, Quohog, orwhatever your name is, did you ever stand in thehead of a whale-boat? did you ever strike a fish?

告訴刮荷格走過來吧。天啊,他有多厲害的一支標(biāo)槍呀!樣子象是用好鋼料打成的;他大概也使得很不錯吧。我說,刮荷格,或者隨你叫什么名字,你可曾站在捕鯨艇頭過?你可打過一條魚?

Without saying a word, Queequeg, in his wild sort ofway, jumped upon the bulwarks, from thence intothe bows of one of the whale-boats hanging to theside; and then bracing his left knee, and poising his harpoon, cried out in some such way asthis:

魁魁格一言不發(fā),野里野氣地跳上了舷墻,又從舷墻上跳到一艘吊在船側(cè)的捕鯨艇頭上,然后支起他的左膝頭,平舉著他的標(biāo)槍,好象是這樣的叫嚷起來:

Cap'ain, you see him small drop tar on water dere? You see him? well, spose him one whaleeye, well, den! and taking sharp aim at it, he darted the iron right over old Bildad's broad brim,clean across the ship's decks, and struck the glistening tar spot out of sight.

船長,你看見那海面上的一小滴柏油吧?你看見嗎?好,就當(dāng)它是一只鯨的眼睛,那么!瞧著吧!于是,他以那一小滴柏油為目標(biāo),就把那支標(biāo)槍嗖地一聲掠過比勒達(dá)老頭的闊邊帽頂,直穿過船甲板,把那滴閃爍的柏油打得無影無蹤了。

Now, said Queequeg, quietly, hauling in the line, spos-ee him whale-e eye; why, dad whaledead.

瞧,魁魁格鎮(zhèn)定地拉著繩索,說道,那要是鯨的眼睛的話,哼,那只鯨就完蛋啦。

Quick, Bildad, said Peleg, his partner, who, aghast at the close vicinity of the flying harpoon,had retreated towards the cabin gangway. Quick, I say, you Bildad, and get the ship's papers.We must have Hedgehog there, I mean Quohog, in one of our boats. Look ye, Quohog, we'llgive ye the ninetieth lay, and that's more than ever was given a harpooneer yet out ofNantucket.

So down we went into the cabin, and to my great joy Queequeg was soon enrolled among thesame ship's company to which I myself belonged.

于是我們走進(jìn)了艙里,教我極感快活的是魁魁格立刻就成為我所屬的這只船的船員了。

When all preliminaries were over and Peleg had got everything ready for signing, he turned tome and said, I guess, Quohog there don't know how to write, does he? I say, Quohog, blast ye!dost thou sign thy name or make thy mark?

等一切的準(zhǔn)備工作都做完,法勒把要簽約的事情都料理停當(dāng)?shù)臅r候,他對我說,我想,那個刮荷格是不會寫字的,他會嗎?我說,刮荷格,該死!你要簽名還是畫個押?
