First: According to magnitude I divide the whalesinto three primary BOOKS (subdivisible intoCHAPTERS), and these shall comprehend them all,both small and large.

第一　我按照大小,把鯨分為主要的三篇(各篇再分為章),這就把它們不論大小都包括在內(nèi)了。

I. THE FOLIO WHALE; II. the OCTAVO WHALE; III.the DUODECIMO WHALE.

(一)對開鯨;(二)八開鯨;(三)十二開鯨。

As the type of the FOLIO I present the SpermWhale; of the OCTAVO, the Grampus; of theDUODECIMO, the Porpoise.

我以抹香鯨,逆戟鯨,小鯨分別作為對開型,八開型,十二開型的代表。

FOLIOS. Among these I here include the following chapters:

I. The Sperm Whale; II. the Right Whale; III. the Fin Back Whale; IV. the Humpbacked Whale;V. the Razor Back Whale; VI. the Sulphur Bottom Whale.

第一篇(對開型)　第一章(抹香鯨)...這種鯨,就是古代英國含糊地稱之為喇叭鯨,

and the Anvil Headed whale, is the present Cachalot of the French, and the Pottsfich of theGermans, and the Macrocephalus of the Long Words.

真甲鯨和砧頭鯨的鯨,也就是現(xiàn)代法國稱為"卡沙洛"。德國稱為"波茨魚"(都是按照法德兩國對于鯨的稱法的音譯。)和那個字音累贅的學(xué)名:疣豬屬鯨。

He is, without doubt, the largest inhabitant of the globe; the most formidable of all whales toencounter;

毫無疑義,它就是地球中最大的居民;也是一切鯨中最難對付的;

the most majestic in aspect; and lastly, by far the most valuable in commerce; he being theonly creature from which that valuable substance, spermaceti, is obtained.
