And as Ahab, leaning over the taffrail, eyed the homewardbound craft, he took from his pocket a small vial of sand, and then looking from the ship to the vial, seemed thereby bringing two remote associations together, for that vial was filled with Nantucket soundings.

于是，當(dāng)一艘船快快活活地順風(fēng)而去的時候，另一艘船卻在頑強地頂風(fēng)而駛；兩艘船就這樣分手了；"裴廓德號"的水手，眼色沉重而依依不舍地望著那艘逐漸遠(yuǎn)退了的"單身漢號"；可是，"單身漢號"上的水手卻開心得根本就沒有留意到他們的神色。這時，亞哈伏在船尾欄桿上，望著那艘駛向家去的船，從口袋里摸出一小瓶黃沙，然后望著那艘船，又望望這一小瓶沙，這樣一來，似乎就把兩個各不相關(guān)的聯(lián)想給串了起來，因為，那只小瓶裝的就是南塔開特海底的東西。

第一百十六章 垂死的鯨

So seemed it with the Pequod. For next day after encountering the gay Bachelor, whales were seen and four were slain; and one of them by Ahab.

在我們這種生活中，往往會碰到這樣的事情：雖然剛才還是垂頭喪氣，趑趄不前，但是，突然從右邊有一艘幸運兒的船只擦身而過，我們也就多少沾到了一陣疾風(fēng)，樂不可支地覺得我們那些癟袋似的篷帆也變得脹鼓鼓的了。"裴廓德號"似乎就是這般情況。因為在碰到那艘興高采烈的"單身漢號"后的第二天，我們就發(fā)現(xiàn)了許多鯨，而且打到了四條，其中有一條是亞哈打到的。
