Al Smith was governor of New York States. He was afamous man.
阿爾.史密斯是紐約的州長。他是個(gè)名人。
He was born very poor on the East Side of New YorkCity.

He had little education.He worked very hard and wongreat success.

One day,as governor, he was visiting the state prison at Sing Sing.
有一天,作為州長,他訪問星星州的監(jiān)獄。
Sing Sing is one of the largest prisons in the United States

asked Mr.Smith to say something to the prisoners.

Mr.Smith had never spoken to this kind of audience before.

He did not know how to begin.
他不知道該怎樣開口。
Finally,he said,"My fellow citizens..."
最后,他說:"我親愛的公民們......"
Then he remembered that when a man goes to prison he is no longer a citizen.
接著他想起一個(gè)人蹲進(jìn)監(jiān)獄就不再是公民了。
He began again."My fellow prisoners..." That did not sound right,so he said,
他重新開始:"我親愛的囚犯們......"那聽起來也不對(duì)勁兒,于是他說:
"Well,anyway,I'm glad to see so many of you here today."
"噢,無論如何,今天在這兒見到你們這么多人真是太高興了。"
