Bridge of Sighs in Cambridge is a covered bridge belonging to St John’s College of Cambridge University. It was built in 1831 and crosses the River. Cam between the college’s Third Court and New Court. The architect was Henry Hutchinson.
Bridge of Sighs is divided into three layers:the upper layer, the middle layer, and the lower layer. The lower layer is the half-oval arch, and the middle layer is a passage, also called “the gallery”,Differ from other galleries, the floor of the gallery is not straight, but arched, which means the walkers-by have to cross the bridge on the slope. The whole bridge is in light yellow.
Bridge of Sighs came into being because the building of New Court made necessary a second crossing of the river between it and Third Court, and New Court’s architect seized the opportunity for some more charming and allusive romanticism. Today it is part of the main thoroughfare through the College and used daily by those who live and work here.
On two separate occasions, students have pulled the prank of dangling a car under the bridge. In the first incident, a 1928 Austin 7 was punted down the river using four punts that had been lashed together, and then hoisted up under the bridge using ropes. In the second incident, a Reliant Regal three-wheeler car was dangled under the bridge. In neither case was the bridge damaged.
Now the bridge is one of Cambridge’s main tourist attractions and Queen Victoria is said to have loved it more than any other spots in the city.
Interestingly, there is also a bridge called bridge of sighs in the University of Oxford, because of its similarity to the famous Bridge of Sighs in Venice. The bridge was originally named as Hertford Bridge, because it located in Hertford College.
And Hertford Bridge is never intended to be a replica of the Venetian bridge, and indeed it bears a closer resemblance to the Rialto Bridge in the same city.
There is a false legend saying that many decades ago, a survey of the health of students was taken, and as Hertford College’s students were the heaviest, the college closed off the bridge to force them to take the stairs, giving them extra exercise.
