Deng Yaping, known as a world-class table tennis athlete, has won many important sports games including the 25th and 26th Olympic Games held respectively in Barcelona in 1992 and Atlanta in 1996,
作為一名大家熟知的世界級乒乓球運動員,鄧亞萍曾在多項重要賽事中奪得冠軍,其中包括1992年在巴塞羅那舉辦的第25屆奧運會及19%年在亞特蘭大舉辦的第26屆奧運會。
After she retired at the end of the 1997 season, Deng became an English major student of Tsinghua University and gained a bachelor's degree in 2001. In the same year, she was admitted to the University of Nottingham in Britain and accomplished the study of her master's degree there. Eventually, in 2008 she received a PhD degree in Land Economy at the Jesus College in University of Cambridge.
在1997年賽季結(jié)束后,鄧亞萍結(jié)束了她的運動生涯,成為了清華大學英語專業(yè)的一名學生,并于2001年順利獲得了學士學位。同年,她被英國諾丁漢大學錄取,在該校取得了碩士學位。最終在2008年,她在劍橋大學的耶穌學院獲得了土地經(jīng)濟學專業(yè)的博士學位。
At the end of 1996, Deng Yaping was recommended by Juan Antonio Samaranch, who then was the president of the International Olympic Committee, for the appointment of its members of the International Olympic Committee Athletes Commission. Though Mr. Samaranch helped her build a good platform in the field of international sports development, Deng gradually realized that she was confronted with a great obstacle English, The working languages of the Olympic Committee are English and French. However, at that time, Deng had just started learning English from scratch,let alone French. She felt quite anxious for her incompetence, and decided to catch up as soon as possible.
1996年底,鄧亞萍被時任國際奧委會主席的胡安安東尼奧薩馬蘭奇先生提名為國際奧委會運動委員會委員。盡管這為她在國際體育領域提供了一個良好的發(fā)展平臺,但她逐漸意識到英語成為制約她順利開展工作的一個重要因素。因為國際奧委會的兩種工作語言分別是英語與法語,然而,當時鄧亞萍的英語學習剛剛起步,更不用說法語了。她感到十分焦急,決定盡快地學好這兩門語言,迎頭趕上。
During the learning process, she led a boring life. After four hours of classes every day, she had to spend four hours more to finish her professors assignments.
從開始學習英語到最終取得博士學位這一期間,她都是過著一種枯燥的生活。在每天上完4小時課后,她還要另外花4個小時來完成教授布置的作業(yè)。
A year later, a miracle happened. Facing the strict professors of Cambridge, Deng read her doctoral thesis, which is over 35,000 words, on the research of “The Impact of the Olympic Games on Chinese Development”. This article gained unanimous approval! Mr. Samaranch praised her for “having the key to open the world,
—年之后,奇跡出現(xiàn)了。面對著嚴格的劍橋大學的考官,鄧亞萍用英語宣讀了長達3.5萬字的博士論文,文章討論的是關于“奧運會對中國未來發(fā)展的影響”,并獲得 一致通過薩馬蘭奇先生稱贊她“擁有了打開世界大門的鑰匙”。
Her courage of conquering difficulties in one of the best higher education institutions in the world inspires lots of people. We admire her perseverance and determination. Her success proves that where there is a will, there is a way.
