It was in 2008 when Taylor Swift won her very first American Music Award (AMA), for Favorite Country Female Artist. During the ceremony, the then 18-year-old US singer-songwriter wore a long white dress, and performed White Horse, a song about how she came from a small town where a boy broke her heart.

A decade later, on Oct 9, Swift opened this year’s AMA with a mind-blowing performance of her new song I Did Something Bad. Wearing a black bodysuit and boots, the soon-to-be-28-year-old Swift sang about how she’d finally seen through the way the world works and was not easily hurt anymore. She took home three awards, including Artist of the Year. That gave Swift a total of 23 AMA trophies, more than any other female artist in music history.

Yes, Swift left the small town girl behind to become a strong woman. But it’s not just she who’s changed: She has made sure that the entertainment business – the darkness of which she has come to know over the past 10 years – has grown with her.

So she posted a note online urging Apple to respect the time and effort artists had put into their music and make sure they got paid. Promptly, Apple changed its policy.

Also, in 2017, Swift sued an ex-DJ who touched her bottom during a photo shoot in 2013. She refused to back down even when people doubted her. Victims are sometimes doubted during sexual harassment cases, but she won the case in the end.
