A Real Winner

One resident of our retirement center loved to talk politics. Following the election, I asked him if he’d picked a winner. “Well,” he casually replied, “the man I voted for lost.” “You seem pretty calm about it,” I said. “That’s because the man I bet on won.”

【詞匯講解】

1.resident住客。也可以指“居住的”：They engaged a resident tutor.

他們聘用了一名住家的家庭教師。

2.retirement退休/隱居。 He lives in retirement, away from everyone.他遠(yuǎn)離大家隱居著。

3.politics政治。要注意politic與politics的區(qū)別。politic是形容詞，指“謹(jǐn)慎的/考慮周到的”，動詞是“從政”的意思。

4.pick挑選。It took her two hours to pick a dress that suited her.

她花了兩個小時才挑選了一件合適的衣服。也可以指“采摘”：Ripe apples pick easily.熟了的蘋果容易摘。

5.casually漫不經(jīng)心地。也可以指“偶然地”：I didn’t see him, except casually, in two months.

我兩個月里一直沒有見過他,除了偶爾相遇。

6.bet on打賭。
