笑話原文】

Letter of Recommendation

When Peters learned that he was being fired, he went to see the head of human resources. "Since I've been with the firm for so long," he said, "I think I deserve at least a letter of recommendation."

The human resources director agreed and said he'd have the letter the next day. The following morning, Peters found a letter on his desk. It read, "Jonathan Peters worked for our company for 11 years. When he left us, we were very satisfied."

詞匯講解】

1. recommendation推薦。speak in recommendation of sb.口頭引薦某人;recommendation for food關(guān)于飲食的推薦;a glowing recommendation熱烈的推薦。This method deserves recommendation.這種做法值得提倡。Self-praise is no recommendation.自夸不足為自薦。

2. head領(lǐng)導(dǎo)。head在不同語境下搭配不同的詞有很多含義：head teacher高級教師;chapter head 每章正文前的標題;head current逆流。

3. human resources人力資源。我們常見的縮寫HR指的就是human resources. develop human resources開發(fā)人才資源。

4.firm公司。也可以作形容詞，是“堅強的”的意思：firm leadership堅強的領(lǐng)導(dǎo)。“固定的”：a firm bargain固定的出價。“緊緊的”： a firm grasp緊緊的一握。“堅定的”：He didn’t stand firm.他站不穩(wěn)立場。

5.deserve應(yīng)得，值得。deserve quotation值得引證;deserve admiration值得欽佩.You deserve it.這是你應(yīng)得的。You deserve this success.你的成功當之無愧。

6.satisfied滿意。perfectly satisfied遂心如意;self-satisfied thief自鳴得意的小偷;feel quite self-satisfied心中飄飄然。
