I Measured It

A carpenter was giving evidence about an accident he had witnessed.

The judge asked him how far away he was from the accident.

The carpenter replied, “Twenty-seven feet, six and one half inches.”

“What? How come you are so sure of that distance?” asked the judge.

“Well, I knew some idiot would ask me. So I measured it!” replied the carpenter.

我量了一下

一個(gè)木匠在給一個(gè)他目擊了的事故作證。

法官問(wèn)他當(dāng)時(shí)距離事故發(fā)生地點(diǎn)有多遠(yuǎn)。

木匠回答：“27英尺，6.5英寸。”

“什么?你怎么這么確定那個(gè)距離?”法官問(wèn)。

“噢，我知道肯定有某些白癡會(huì)問(wèn)我這個(gè)問(wèn)題，所以我量了一下!”木匠回答。

詞匯講解】

1.carpenter，木匠。也可以作動(dòng)詞表示“做木匠活”：He carpentered when he was young.他年輕時(shí)當(dāng)木匠。

2.evidence證據(jù)?？梢宰鲃?dòng)詞， 是“表明”的意思：His tears evidenced great sorrow for what he had done.他的眼淚表明他對(duì)自己所做的事極為懊悔。

3.witness及物動(dòng)詞，目擊：Your actions witness your guilt.你的行動(dòng)足以證明你有罪。也可作名詞，就是“目擊者”、“證人”的意思。

4.accident意外，事故。它所指的未必都是不好的事情：Dick had been an accident by sending over flowers.這句話的意思可不是“迪克送花的時(shí)候出了事故”，而是“迪克送花來(lái)，真是出人意料。”

5.feet,inch。Feet是foot的復(fù)數(shù)形勢(shì)。因?yàn)槭?英尺以上，所以要用復(fù)數(shù)，變?yōu)閒eet。Inch是英寸，而不是英尺，不要被它的讀音誤導(dǎo)了。
