He stopped in front of her window, and, smiling very pleasantly, said, "How shall I find the way to your room?"

他在她的窗前停了下來，非常友善地微笑著說：“我怎樣才能找到通往你房間的路？”

Jennie pointed to an alley near by, where he turned in, and with some difficulty found his way to the dingy staircase.

珍妮指了指附近的一條小路。他拐了進(jìn)去，頗為費(fèi)勁地找到了昏暗的樓梯。

Opening the door to Jennie's gentle "Come in," he said, "I have brought you a handful of flowers to look at this rainy day."

隨著珍妮輕柔的一聲“請(qǐng)進(jìn)”，門開了。他說：“我給你帶了鮮花，你在雨天里可以看看的。”

"Are they for me?" exclaimed Jennie, clapping her hands in delight.

“它們是給我的嗎？”珍妮驚呼，高興得拍起手來。

"How kind you are," she continued, as George laid them in her lap.

“你真是個(gè)熱心腸。”喬治將花放在她膝蓋上，

I have not had a flower since we live in the city.

她繼續(xù)說道：“自從搬到城里來住，我還沒見過花兒呢。”

"Did you use to live in the country?" asked George.

“你原來一直住在鄉(xiāng)下嗎？”喬治問道。

"Oh, yes," answered Jennie, "we used to live in a beautiful cottage,"

“是的，”珍妮回答，“我們?cè)瓉碜≡卩l(xiāng)間小屋里，”

and there were trees and flowers and green grass, and the air was so sweet.

那里有很多樹很多花，還有大片大片的綠草，就連空氣都散發(fā)著香甜的味道。”

"Well, what made you move here?" "Oh," said Jennie, softly, papa died, and mamma was sick so long that the money was all gone.

“是什么原因讓你搬到這里來的？”“噢，”珍妮緩緩地柔聲說道，爸爸去世了，媽媽又一直生病，錢都花完了。

Then mamma had to sell the cottage, and she moved here to try to get work to do.

后來媽媽不得不賣掉房子，搬到這里來想辦法找點(diǎn)事做。

"Do you have to sit here all day?" asked George, glancing around the bare room and out into the dismal street.

喬治掃了一眼空蕩蕩的屋子和窗外陰郁的街道，問道：“你必須整天都坐在這兒?jiǎn)幔?rdquo;

"Yes," said Jennie, "because I am lame; but I would not care for that, if I could only help mamma."

“是的，”珍妮回答，“因?yàn)槲业耐扔袣埣?；但其?shí)我不太在意這個(gè)，只希望能給媽媽幫點(diǎn)忙。”

"I declare, it's too had!" said George, who dreaded nothing so much as being obliged to stay in the house.

“我敢說你已經(jīng)做到了！”喬治說道。他擔(dān)心沒有那么多的事不得不呆在家里。
