"Fire! fire!" The cry crept out on the still night air, and the fire bells began to ring.

“著火啦！著火啦！”叫喊聲劃破了寂靜的夜空，火災(zāi)報(bào)警鈴聲隨之響起。

Fred was wakened by the alarm and the red light streaming into his room.

報(bào)警聲驚醒了弗雷德，紅色的火光向著他的房間逼近。

He dressed himself in a moment, almost, and tapped at the door of his mother's bedroom.

他立刻穿上衣服，幾乎同時(shí)敲響了他母親臥室的門。

"It is Mr. Barton's house, mother. Do let me go," he said in eager, excited tones.

“是巴頓家的房子著火了，媽媽。讓我去幫忙吧。”他用急切而又激動(dòng)的語氣說道。

Mrs. Liscom thought a moment.

利斯科姆夫人想了一下。

He was young, but she could trust him, and she knew how much his heart was in the request.

雖然他年紀(jì)不大，但她相信他能行，而且她也知道他的請(qǐng)求是多么真心實(shí)意。

"Yes, you may go," she answered;" but be careful, my boy.

“好吧，你可以去，”她回答，“但一定要小心，我的孩子。

If you can help, do so; but do nothing rashly. "

如果你能幫上忙，那一定要幫；不過千萬不要莽撞。”

Fred promised to follow her advice, and hurried to the fire.

弗雷德保證會(huì)遵從母親的建議，然后匆忙向火災(zāi)現(xiàn)場(chǎng)跑去。

Mr. and Mrs. Barton were not at home.

巴頓夫婦不在家。

The house had been left in charge of the servants.

房子留給傭人們照看。

The fire spread with fearful speed, for there was a high wind, and it was found impossible to save the house.

火勢(shì)以令人恐懼的速度蔓延著，由于風(fēng)力太大，想保住房子是不可能的了。

The servants ran about, screaming and lamenting, but doing nothing to any purpose.

傭人們紛紛叫嚷著、抱怨著，四散逃竄，任何想辦法的事都沒做。

Fred found Tom outside, in safety.

弗雷德在外面找到了湯姆，他安然無恙。

"Where is Katy?" he asked.

“凱蒂在哪兒？”弗雷德問。

Tom, trembling with terror, seemed to have had no thought but of his own escape.

湯姆害怕得渾身發(fā)抖，看起來他只想著自己逃出來，其他的都顧不上了。
