When they met again the widow's son did not appear,
當(dāng)開學(xué)后再見面時(shí)，寡婦的兒子沒有出現(xiàn)。
and the farmer's son, being next to him, might now have been at the head of his class.
富農(nóng)的兒子因?yàn)槌煽兙o隨其后，可以成為班上的班長了。
Instead of seizing the vacant place, however,
但是，他并沒有搶占這個(gè)空位置，
he went to the widow's house to inquire what could be the cause of her son's absence.
而是去寡婦的家里詢問是什么原因使得她兒子上課缺席。
Poverty was the cause; the poor woman found that she was not able,
原因是貧窮?？蓱z的女人發(fā)現(xiàn)她不能，
with her utmost efforts, to continue to pay for the tuition and books of her son,
盡了最大努力也沒辦法繼續(xù)支付兒子的學(xué)費(fèi)和書本費(fèi)了，
and so he, poor fellow! had been compelled to give up his schooling, and to return to labor for her support.
可憐的家伙！所以他不得不被迫輟學(xué)，回到家里幫媽媽干活。
The farmer's son, out of the allowance of pocket money which his father gave him,
富農(nóng)的兒子拿出父親給他的零用錢，
bought all the necessary books and paid for the tuition of his rival.
給他的對(duì)手買齊了所需的課本，交齊了學(xué)費(fèi)，
He also permitted him to be brought back again to the head of his class,
還允許他再次做回班長的位置。
where he continued for some time, at the expense of his generous rival.
寡婦的兒子繼續(xù)做著班長，而學(xué)費(fèi)卻是慷慨的對(duì)手提供的。
