他們環(huán)顧四周，盼望眼前不再是荒涼的景象。

Immense branches were shivered from the largest trees; small ones were entirely stripped of their leaves;

那些長得最高大的樹濃密的樹葉搖曳顫抖著，而小樹的枝葉則完全脫落了。

the long grass was bowed to the earth; the waters were whirled in eddies out of the little rivulets;

長得很高的青草匍匐在地面上，清水從小溪里打著漩渦流淌出來;

birds, leaving their nests to seek shelter in the crevices of the rocks, unable to stem the driving air, flapped their wings and fell upon the earth;

飛離鳥巢在巖石的裂縫中尋覓著棲身之地的鳥兒，無法在涌來的氣流中穩(wěn)住身軀，結(jié)果撲打著翅膀落在地上。

the frightened animals of the plain, almost suffocated by the impetuosity of the wind, sought safety and found destruction;

原野上受驚的動物被鋪天蓋地的大風(fēng)刮得窒息了，到處尋找能避風(fēng)的安全所在，最后倒地不起。

some of the largest trees were torn up by the roots; the sluices of the mountains were filled, and innumerable torrents rushed down the before empty gullies.

那些大樹有的被風(fēng)連根拔起，山上洪流卷起數(shù)不清的狂潮，朝溪谷奔瀉而下。

The heavens now open, and the lightning and thunder contend with the horrors of the wind.

這時(shí)，天空敞開裂口，電閃雷鳴與駭人的狂風(fēng)展開一場競賽。

In a moment, all was again hushed. Dead silence succeeded the bellow of the thunder, the roar of the wind,

一時(shí)間，所有的一切——電閃雷鳴和山洪，又歸于寂靜。雷鳴怒吼、狂風(fēng)咆哮、

the rush of the waters, the moaning of the beasts, the screaming of the birds.

Nothing was heard save the plash of the agitated lake, as it beat up against the black rocks which girt it in.

除了湍急的湖水繞著黑魆魆的巖石拍打的聲音，什么也聽不到了。
