這時(shí)，陽(yáng)光還是那樣明媚，小鳥(niǎo)還在唧唧喳喳地歌唱，仿佛陽(yáng)光只是在假日才明媚，小鳥(niǎo)只是在假日才放開(kāi)歌喉似的;

and there were the trees waving to all free boys to climb, and nestle among their leafy branches;

樹(shù)木也向無(wú)憂無(wú)慮的孩子們招手，要他們爬上去，依偎它們濃密繁茂的枝頭;

the hay, entreating them to come and scatter it to the pure air; the green corn, gently beckoning toward wood and stream;

干草堆懇求他們走到近前，在清新純凈的空氣將其攤開(kāi);綠油油的稻谷溫柔地向樹(shù)林和小溪示意;

the smooth ground, rendered smoother still by blending lights and shadows, inviting to runs and leaps, and long walks, nobody knows whither.

籠罩著光與影的大地顯得更加光滑平整，邀請(qǐng)他們到上面跑、跳或漫步呢，沒(méi)有人曉得自己要去哪里。

It was more than boy could bear, and with a joyous whoop, the whole cluster took to their heels, and spread themselves about, shouting and laughing as they went.

既然如此，還有哪個(gè)男孩子能夠保持矜持，隨著一聲高喊，這一群人撒腿便跑，向四面八方散開(kāi)，一邊跑還一邊叫著，快活地大笑著。

" 'T is natural, thank Heaven!" said the poor schoolmaster, looking after them, "I am very glad they didn't mind me."

“這是再自然不過(guò)的事情，感謝上帝!”可憐的教師說(shuō)，目送著他們走遠(yuǎn)。“我很高興他們沒(méi)把我的話放在心上。”

Toward night, the schoolmaster walked over to the cottage where his little friend lay sick.

傍晚時(shí)分，教師來(lái)到一個(gè)農(nóng)舍前，屋子里面他的那位小朋友臥病在床。

Knocking gently at the cottage door, it was opened without loss of time.

教師輕輕地敲了敲門(mén)，門(mén)馬上就開(kāi)了。

He entered a room where a group of women were gathered about one who was wringing her hands and crying bitterly.

他走進(jìn)一間屋子，里面一小堆婦女圍繞著一個(gè)比他們年齡稍長(zhǎng)的人，她哭得很慘，坐在椅子上吻她的手，前仰后合地?fù)u動(dòng)著。

"O dame!" said the schoolmaster, drawing near her chair, "is it so bad as this?"

“啊，婆婆!”教師說(shuō)著，走近她的座椅，“怎么糟到這種程度了?”
