這位深孚眾望的紳士用這樣的心情和禮儀指責我說，這是一個年輕人令人震驚的犯罪。

I shall neither attempt to palliate nor deny;

對此，我既不打算辯解也不想否認。

but content myself with hoping that I may be one of those whose follies cease with their youth,

and not of that number who are ignorant in spite of experience.

and whose age has only added obstinacy to stupidity, is surely the object either of abhorrence or contempt,

Much more is he to be abhorred, who, as he has advanced in age, has receded from virtue, and become more wicked—with less temptation;

But youth is not my only crime; I am accused of acting a theatrical part.

A theatrical part may either imply some peculiarity of gesture, or a dissimulation of my real sentiments, and an adoption of the opinions and language of another man.

所謂有威脅的角色要么暗示姿態(tài)具有某種特征，要么暗示我在掩飾自己的真正情感。
