在拉納克教會(huì)，已經(jīng)有好幾個(gè)月沒有舉行洗禮儀式了。

It was now the hottest time of persecution;

現(xiàn)在是宗教迫害最瘋狂的時(shí)候，

and the inhabitants of that parish found other places in which to worship God, and celebrate the ordinances of religion.

那個(gè)教區(qū)的居民發(fā)現(xiàn)其他地方在做禮拜，舉行宗教法令的頒布儀式。

It was now the Sabbath day, and a small congregation of about a hundred souls had met for divine service,

今天是安息日，大約一百位信眾聚在一起禮拜，

in a place more magnificent than any temple that human hands had ever built to Deity.

舉行儀式的地方要比人類憑雙手建造的任何神廟都要宏偉壯麗。

The congregation had not assembled to the toll of the bell, but each heart knew the hour and observed it;

教堂會(huì)眾并沒有在鐘聲緩緩敲響時(shí)集合，但是每個(gè)人心里都清楚集合的時(shí)間，都很守時(shí)。

for there are a hundred sundials among the hills, woods, moors, and fields;

由于在群山、叢林、荒野和田地之間有一百個(gè)日晷儀，

and the shepherd and the peasant see the hours passing by them in sunshine and shadow.

牧羊人和農(nóng)夫得以在驕陽和樹蔭下通過日晷儀觀測(cè)到時(shí)間的流逝。

The church in which they were assembled, was hewn by God's hand out of the eternal rock.

他們集會(huì)的教堂是上帝之手劈開巨石修建成的。

A river rolled its way through a mighty chasm of cliffs, several hundred feet high,

一條小河流過懸崖峭壁的巨大裂縫，懸崖峭壁高達(dá)數(shù)百英尺，

of which the one side presented enormous masses, and the other corresponding recesses,

其中一側(cè)有隆起的石碓，另一側(cè)相應(yīng)地凹了進(jìn)去，

as if the great stone girdle had been rent by a convulsion.

仿佛這塊巨石的裂口是一場(chǎng)地震形成的。

The channel was overspread with prodigious fragments of rocks or large loose stones, some of them smooth and bare,

通道是由數(shù)量驚人的碎石塊或者大塊裸石鋪成的，其中有一些很光滑、平整，

others containing soil and verdure in their rents and fissures, and here and there crowned with shrubs and trees.

其他的則在裂縫里和紋理間有土質(zhì)和青綠色的草。這里的石頭上隨處可見冠狀樹叢和樹木。
