have got to=(have)gotta意為“不得不，得”。

Skipping Class逃課

Helen: Robert, where are you going?
海倫：羅伯特，你去哪兒呢？
Robert: I've got to go to the railway station to pick up a friend.
羅伯特：我去火車站接一個朋友。
Helen: But class begins in a half hour.
海倫：但是再過半小時就要上課了。
Robert: I've got to play truant. I don't have a choice. And besides, this afternoon's class isn't going to be very interesting. I don't feel like I’m going to miss very much if I don't make it.
羅伯特：我得逃課了。我沒辦法。再說，今天下午的課也沒意思。我覺得我不去上也損失不了多少。
Helen: That may be true, but you know the teacher giving the lecture is very strict. I am afraid you're going to fail this class if you are always absent. Couldn't you let someone else go get your friend?
海倫：這也許沒錯。不過，你知道上這堂課的老師特別嚴(yán)，我擔(dān)心如果你老是逃課的話，你會不及格的。你不會叫另外一個人去接你朋友嗎？
Robert: I probably could let someone else go, but why should I? You know you could say "yes" for me when the teacher calls the roll if you're really worried that I might fail.
羅伯特：我也許可以叫別人去，可是我為什么要這么做呢？如果你真擔(dān)心我考試不及格的話，在老師點(diǎn)名的時候，你可以幫我喊一聲“到”啊。
Helen: That's a bit of a problem. You know I don't like to lie, especially to teachers.
海倫：那可不行，你知道，我不喜歡說謊，特別是在老師面前。

 

 

1.“pick up”在對話中的意思是“用汽車搭載某人或接某人”。I'll pick you up at 7 o'clock.（7點(diǎn)鐘我開車去接你。）He picked up a hitch-hiker.（他中途讓個搭便車的人上了車。）
2.“（考試、功課等）不及格”用“fail(the subject，course，exam，test
etc. ) ”。例如 : I failed my driving test the first time I took it. （我第一次考駕照的時候沒及格。）Daniel failed maths but passed all his other subjects.（丹尼爾數(shù)學(xué)不及格，不過其他科目都通過了。）另外，fail表示此義時也可以用作不及物動詞。例如：I passed in history but failed in chemistry.（我的歷史通過了，可是化學(xué)沒有及格。）She took the exam but failed.（她參加了考試，不過沒有及格。）

 

 

“play hooky”是“玩”什么呢

據(jù)說一位中國留學(xué)生在費(fèi)城讀研究生時，同時擔(dān)任了助教的工作。因?yàn)槌Ｈル娊讨行念I(lǐng)取作業(yè)、報(bào)表等，所以與一位職員關(guān)系頗熟。
一天下午，這位留學(xué)生去領(lǐng)取報(bào)表，結(jié)果沒拿到，因?yàn)槟莻€職員不在。他等了又等，仍然不見那個職員的蹤影。后來職員終于出現(xiàn)了，朋友問他：“你到底去哪兒啦？一職員笑嘻嘻地開玩笑說：“Play hooky.”
這位留學(xué)生不了解“hooky”這個詞的含義，主觀地認(rèn)為：既然它與“play”用在一起，一定與運(yùn)動、比賽有關(guān)，像“play hockey”、“play basketball”一樣。于是很認(rèn)真地問他：“誰贏了？比分是多少？”只見職員突然表情尷尬，沒做任何應(yīng)答，只悻悻然地給了這位留學(xué)生報(bào)表。
這位朋友同樣也頗為懊惱，拿了報(bào)表，回到住處。他開始查字典，才知道“play hooky”是個俚語，是“逃學(xué)”的意思。
