"But what is the good of all these vague theories," cried the banker impatiently,

About this girl, Miss Holder. You saw her return by the kitchen door, I presume?"

霍爾德小姐，關(guān)于這個(gè)女仆，我想你看見(jiàn)她是從廚房門(mén)附近回來(lái)的，是嗎？"

"Yes; when I went to see if the door was fastened for the night I met her slipping in. I saw the man, too, in the gloom."

"是的，當(dāng)我去查看那扇門(mén)有沒(méi)有閂好時(shí)，我碰見(jiàn)她偷偷地溜了進(jìn)來(lái)。我也看見(jiàn)那個(gè)男人在暗地里。"

"Do you know him?"

"你認(rèn)識(shí)他嗎？"

"Oh, yes! he is the green-grocer who brings our vegetables round. His name is Francis Prosper."

"噢，我認(rèn)識(shí)！他是給我們送蔬菜的菜販。他的名字是弗朗西斯·普羅斯珀。"

"He stood," said Holmes, "to the left of the door -- that is to say, farther up the path than is necessary to reach the door?"

"Yes, he did."

"And he is a man with a wooden leg?"

Something like fear sprang up in the young lady's expressive black eyes.

這位年輕小姐富于表情的黑眼珠突然顯得有點(diǎn)害怕的樣子。

"Why, you are like a magician," said she. "How do you know that?"

"怎么？你真像個(gè)魔術(shù)師啊，"她說(shuō)，"你怎么知道這個(gè)？"

She smiled, but there was no answering smile in Holmes's thin, eager face.

她當(dāng)時(shí)面帶笑容，但是福爾摩斯瘦削而顯得熱切的臉上沒(méi)有迎合對(duì)方的笑容。

"I should be very glad now to go upstairs," said he.

"我很想現(xiàn)在就上樓去，"福爾摩斯說(shuō)

"I shall probably wish to go over the outside of the house again.

"我很可能還要到房子外邊再走一趟。

Perhaps I had better take a look at the lower windows before I go up."

也許我在上樓之前最好再看看樓下的窗戶(hù)。"

He walked swiftly round from one to the other, pausing only at the large one which looked from the hall onto the stable lane.

他很快地從一個(gè)個(gè)窗戶(hù)前走過(guò)，只是在那扇可以從大廳向外望到馬廄小道的大窗戶(hù)前停了一下。

This he opened and made a very careful examination of the sill with his powerful magnifying lens.

"Now we shall go upstairs," said he at last.
