"But sir, what breaks my heart and covers me with shame is this

“但是先生，使我心碎，讓我滿是羞愧的是

—until now I never truly saw the love of my Saviour in giving himself for me.

——直到現(xiàn)在我還未真正看到過我的救世主為我獻身的愛。

I confess it! I confess it!" he cried, looking up to heaven, his eyes streaming with tears;

我懺悔！我懺悔！”他哭喊道，仰面看天，他的眼里飽含淚水；

and, pressing the minister's hand close to his breast, he added, "It was God who made you tell that story.

老人把牧師的手放在自己的胸膛上，補充說，“你講述那個故事是上帝的旨意。”

"Praise be to his holy name that my dear mother did not die in vain;

“贊頌神圣的上帝，他讓我的母親沒有白白送命；

and that the prayers which, I was told, she used to offer for me have been at last answered:

她之前為我做的禱告已經(jīng)得到了應(yīng)驗：

for the love of my mother has been blessed in making me see, as I never saw before, the love of my Saviour.

因為母親的愛，讓我看見了此前從未見過的我的救世主的愛。

I see it; I believe it. I have found deliverance in old age where I found it in my childhood

我看見了；我也相信這是真的。我得到了救贖，在過去我還是小孩子的時候

—in the cliff of the Rock; but it is the Rock of Ages!"

——在巖石斷崖上；但是那是萬古磐石！”

And clasping his hands, he repeated, with intense fervour,

他鼓起了掌，滿懷熱情地重復(fù)道：

"Can a mother forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb?

“一個母親會忘記自己哺乳的孩子嗎？她不該同情子體內(nèi)的孩子嗎？

They may forget, yet will I not forget thee!"

她們可能會忘記，但是我絕不會忘記你！”
