大多數(shù)形容詞可以用于比較，說明事物間的等級、程度差別。比較等級分為原級、比較級和最高級三個等級。原級即形容詞本來的形式，比較級和最高級都是由形容詞原級變化而來的。
形容詞比較等級的規(guī)則構成
1．單音節(jié)形容詞在詞尾加-er ，-est
long–longer –longest
2．以e 結尾的單音節(jié)形容詞在詞尾加-r ，-st
nice–nicer –nicest
3．以重讀閉音節(jié)結尾的形容詞，雙寫詞尾輔音字母再加-er ，-est
big–bigger –biggest
4．以“輔音字母＋y ”結尾的形容詞，變y 為i 再加-er ，-est
easy–easier –easiest
5．兩個或兩個以上音節(jié)的形容詞，即雙音節(jié)或多音節(jié)詞，在形容詞前加more，most
healthy–more healthy–most healthy

2．bad/ill–worse–worst
3．many/much–more–most
4．far–farther/further–farthest/furthest
5．old–older/elder–oldest/eldest
比較等級的不規(guī)則構成
1．合二為一共三對，壞病兩多并兩好

good/well–better–best
2．一分為二有兩個，一是遠來二是老

old–older/elder–oldest/eldest
3．還有一詞含義多，只記少來不記小
