FIFA acknowledged last Wednesday that bribes werepaid for votes in bids for the 1998 and 2010 WorldCups, and the organization is trying to recoup tens ofmillions of dollars in damages.

In a legal document, FIFA admitted for the firsttime that South Africa's $10m payment to JackWarner and Chuck Blazer was a bribe for World Cupvotes in 2010. Warner also accepted a bribe for his1998 World Cup vote.

FIFA claims it is the victim of corrupt individuals, despite widespread criticism that bribe-taking was embedded in its culture in the presidencies of Joao Havelange and Sepp Blatter.FIFA wants compensation from those accused for the damage illegal actions caused to FIFA'sbrand, reputation and business relationships.

"The convicted defendants abused the positions of trust they held at FIFA and otherinternational football organizations and caused serious and lasting damage to FIFA," FIFAPresident Gianni Infantino said Wednesday in a statement. "The monies they pocketedbelonged to global football and were meant for the development and promotion of the game.FIFA as the world governing body of football wants that money back and we are determined toget it no matter how long it takes."
