A group of influential lawmakers have taken aim at one facet of Google’s operating-system partnership with Huawei. A recent deal between the two was designed to upgrade capabilities on smartphones—like those made by Huawei—that run Google’s Android OS.
The new attention comes after members of Congress questioned Facebook Inc. about its data partnerships with Huawei and three other Chinese electronics makers. Facebook said it would wind down the Huawei deal by week’s end, and it says no user data was stored on Huawei’s servers.
Some members of Congress also plan to voice displeasure over Google’s continued partnership with Huawei in light of its more recent decision not to renew a Defense Department contract.
“We look forward to answering these questions,” a Google spokesman said Thursday. “Like many U.S. companies, we have agreements with dozens of [manufacturers] around the world, including Huawei. We do not provide special access to Google user data as part of these agreements, and our agreements include privacy and security protections for user data.”
A spokesperson for Huawei wasn’t immediately available to comment.
The group of lawmakers involved includes some of the biggest public critics of Huawei. Sens. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) and Rep. Mike Conaway (R., Texas), introduced separate bills in the Senate and House aimed at tightening up restrictions on Huawei’s telecommunications-equipment sales in the U.S. Those bills have gained bipartisan support in both chambers.
