【mean business 玩真的】
mean business是表示“當(dāng)真,玩真的”,沒有兒戲的成份在內(nèi),一心一意地去達(dá)成某件事,未必和“生意”business有關(guān):
A: I still can't believe Mary got into college.
我還是不敢相信瑪莉考進(jìn)大學(xué)了。
B: Well, she meant business this time.
呃,她這次是玩真的。
mean business也可以表示為了某種目的而來:
A: Why are the police outside?
警察怎么會在這兒?
B: They mean business. Otherwise, they wouldn't have come here.
他們來辦事。要不然沒事他們不會來的。
1) be down on... 對……感到失望,看不起。
2) in action 在行動中,在動作中
3) half-brain (n.) 只有半個腦,意即“沒大腦,白癡”。
