A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home from the war. He called his parents from San Francisco.這是一個(gè)最終從戰(zhàn)場(chǎng)歸來的士兵的故事。他從舊金山打電話給他的父母：

"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.就在此時(shí)兒子掛斷了電話，他的父母再也沒有他的消息了。
A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide. The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son.然而幾天后，他們接到了舊金山的警察打來的電話，被告知他們兒子已經(jīng)墜樓身亡了。警方相信這是一起自殺案件。于是這對(duì)傷心欲絕的父母飛往舊金山，被帶到停尸間去辨認(rèn)兒子的遺體。
