Die lian hua
Zhu Shuzhen
Before the tower, thousands of strands of hanging willow.
I'd like to tie down the green of spring.
I could detain it a short while, but in the end it would vanish.
Willow catkins float in the wind
As though following spring just to see where it calls home.
All through the mountains and rivers filled with green I hear the cuckoo,
A bird without feelings of its own.
It must be grieving for another's sorrow.
I take wine and make an offering to spring, but there is no response.
At dusk, though, comes a driving rain.

Tune: Butterflies in Love with Flowers
Zhu Shuzhen
Thousands of willow twigs beyond my bower sway;
They try to retain spring, but she won't stay
For long and goes away.
In vernal breeze the willow down still wafts with grace;
It tries to follow spring to find her dwelling place.
Hills and rills greened all over, I hear cuckoos sing;
Feeling no grief, why should they give me a sharp sting?
With wine cup in hand, I
Ask spring who won't reply.
When evening grizzles,
A cold rain drizzles.

The Butterfly Fluttering around the Flowers
Farewell, Spring!
Zhu Shuzhen
Beyond the tower th' weeping willows reach out
Countless twigs, intending to hold up Spring, which soon flees.
Th' trees, as if curious of Spring's whereabouts,
Send out their catkins to follow close the breeze.
From the green hills come the cuckoo's plaintive cry:
If th' bird were unfeeling, why does it wail o'er man's pain?
Cup in hand I pledge Spring, which gives no reply,
When swashing and splashing down comes th' evening rain.
