A bully is always a coward.
［注解］bully恃強凌弱者。指恃強凌弱者欺負弱小者，卻總是害怕比他強的人。
［譯］欺負弱小者永遠是懦夫；色厲內(nèi)荏。
A clear conscience is a soft pillow.
［注解］conscience指一個人的良心，如果沒有做虧心事（a clear conscience），當然睡覺也安穩(wěn)、踏實（a soft pillow）。
［譯］問心無愧，高枕無憂。
A clear conscience laughs at false accusations.
［譯］純凈的良心不屑于錯誤的指責。
A fault confessed is half redressed.
［注解］confess意為“承認”；redress指“糾正，矯正”，意指錯誤承認了，一半已改掉。
［譯］知錯能改，善莫大焉。
A fox may grow gray, but never good. (or You cannot make a crab walk straight. or The leopard cannot change its spots.
［注解］The leopard cannot change its spots. 出自《舊約·耶利米》第13章第23節(jié)。在文藝作品、普通書寫和日常話語中用得很廣。

［注解］bestow把……贈與，把……給予。
［譯］好名聲能給良好的愿望帶來難以估價的財富。

［注解］luster光澤，光彩。

［注解］相同意思的表達還有：A guilty conscience is a thousand witnesses. A guilty conscience never feels secure. 指內(nèi)心有愧的人老是害怕，做了壞事者總會顯出心中有鬼，可譯作“做賊心虛”。

［注解］breed“醞釀”，喻指“一失足成千古恨，再回首已百年身”。
［譯］小小的疏忽會釀成大錯。

［注解］integrity正直，誠實。a man of moral integrity有道德的人。slanderous造謠的，誹謗的。
［譯］人正不怕影子歪。

［譯］行為可顯示出一個人的品性。

［注解］意指小錯大錯皆是錯，程度雖不相同，性質卻是一樣。如同做一件事差一點未成功和徹底失敗的效果實際相同。早先的表達方式為：An inch in a miss is as good as an ell.
［譯］失之毫厘，謬之千里；毫末之錯仍為錯；死里逃生總是生。
