A:Frank, have you watched the live Boat Race on 3 April at 4:30p.m.?
B:Do you mean the Race on Saturday between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club? Of course, it,s impossible for me to miss it!
A:How wonderful it was! The Cambridge Club eventually won this time!
B:Right! The Oxford Club has triumphed during the past two years, and I thought it would get another victory.
A:The result is never beyond expectation! The two teams are at about the same strength.
B:I agree. Do you think that both the Oxford University and the Cambridge University regard each other as the greatest rival?
A:Yes, I do think so. It seems that competition between them has a very long history, which can be traced back to around 1209,when the Cambridge was just established.
B:I’ve heard an interesting story about a debate between the Oxford and Cambridge scholars. Do you know that there is a book on the school badge of each university?
A:Yeah! What’s up?
知道!
B:Well, the book on the Oxford University school badge is open, while on the Cambridge University school badge is closed. As a result, the Oxford scholars made fun of the Cambridge scholars for not studying hard, but using books to decorate themselves.
A:Really? What’s the response of the Cambridge scholars?
B:They Cambridge scholars fought back immediately, “It’s not the case! In fact, you are reading too slowly. We have already finished learning it, while you are still reading.”
A:The Oxford scholars must be very embarrassed just at that moment. Nevertheless, the story just verified that the Cambridge scholars were extremely good at thinking.
B:Quite right! It is considered that Oxford is good at politics, while Cambridge does better on science and technology.
A:There is a fierce competition between the two universities just because they have different strengths.
B:However, they are collectively called “Oxbridge”,right? Doesn't that mean that they are sister schools, sharing lots of common features?
A:Yes, it does! They are indeed sister schools. As we all know, most Oxford colleges have a sister college in Cambridge. Consequently, despite the impassioned rivalry between the two universities, there is also much cooperation when the need arises.
B:Oh, I remember that at an academic convocation in the Oxford University, the Vice-Chancellor announced a scheme for cooperation in academic work with the Cambridge University.
A:Well, do you still keep in memory the detail information of the scheme?
B:I’m afraid not. However, it is proposed to promote legislation to allow students, whether undergraduate or graduate, from either university to go to the other for special courses of study and to keep residence while doing so.
A:It’s really a good idea! In this way, they are able to share their recourses, and to provide a lot of convenience for their students.
B:Yeah! Though the two universities have different styles, as well as fierce competition, they match very well in some areas,
A: That’s right!
沒錯(cuò)!
