5.emotional emotive
emotional與emotive并不同義,卻常被混淆。emotional表示“充滿感情的”,“易動感情的”,主語多為人;
emotive表示“使人激動的”,“令人感動的”之意,主語多為物。如:
an emotional person 易動感情的人
an emotive speech 令人感動的演講

6.enviable envious
enviable表示“值得羨慕的”,多作定語用。如an enviable possession一筆令人羨慕的財產(chǎn)。而envious表示“羨慕的”,“嫉妒的”,常用于短語be envious of(羨慕……,嫉妒……)。

7.equal equivalent
equal與equivalent近義。但equal指在大小、質(zhì)量、數(shù)量、形狀、價值等方面相當或相等,常用詞組be equal to(等于,和……相等),而
equivalent指在意義、重要性等抽象的方面相當或相等。另外,equal可作名詞用,表“對手”,“匹敵者”。如:

exhausting與exhaustive是同根形容詞,但詞義差別很大。exhausting意為“使人疲憊不堪的”,“筋疲力盡的”。而exhaustive表示“徹底的”,“無遺漏的”,“廣泛的”。如:
We had a long and exhausting meeting this morning.今天上午我們開了一個使人疲倦的長會。
I don’t claim to be exhaustive on this subject.
我并不認為自己把這個問題講透了。
