Two of the world's biggest grocery chains, Tesco PLCand Carrefour SA, have struck a deal to collaborateon how they buy from suppliers in an effort to cutprices amid mounting competition fromAmazon.com Inc. and other rivals.

Tesco, Britain's largest grocery chain, and Carrefour, the French giant, said they would jointly sourcecertain products to lower prices, raise quality andbroaden their product offerings.

英國(guó)最大的食雜連鎖公司樂購(gòu)和法國(guó)巨頭家樂福稱,兩家公司將聯(lián)合采購(gòu)某些商品,以降低價(jià)格、提高質(zhì)量和擴(kuò)大產(chǎn)品供應(yīng)。

The agreement, which the companies said would initially last three years, will give the pairmore scale in negotiations with global suppliers. It will cover joint purchasing of own-brandproducts and goods not for resale, like cleaning products or pallets.

兩家公司表示,這項(xiàng)協(xié)議初步期限為三年,將使兩家公司在與全球供應(yīng)商談判時(shí)更具規(guī)模優(yōu)勢(shì)。該協(xié)議將覆蓋自有品牌產(chǎn)品和非轉(zhuǎn)售商品的聯(lián)合采購(gòu),比如清潔用品或托盤等。

 

Financial terms of the deal, which is expected to be formally agreed within the next twomonths, weren't disclosed.

"We are light on detail," said a Tesco spokeswoman. "The details are very much still beingworked out."

The deal is the latest in a string of moves by traditional grocers the world over as they raceto find new ways to compete with Amazon's growing food ambitions and fast-changing shopperbehavior.

In the U.K., like the U.S., Amazon has also ramped up its fresh food delivery service, recentlyexpanding outside London. In France, Amazon earlier this year signed a deal with CasinoGuichard-Perrachon SA to deliver items from its Monoprix chain.
