Harrowing eyewitness accounts have been emerging from the Syrian town of Houla, where more than 100 people were killed on Friday, in what the United Nations is calling a 'brutal massacre'. Several survivors spoke to the BBC. One said only four of her 20 family members survived after Alawite militia and Syrian security forces burst into the house with knives and Kalashnikov automatic rifles. The international envoy to Syria Kofi Annan, who's in Damascus, said he was shocked and horrified by the killings. At the same time, violence across Syria shows no sign of easing as Jim Muir reports.

Activists reported clashes and deaths in at least seven different parts of the country as the fallout from the Houla massacre continue to be felt both in Syria and around the world. Kofi Annan arriving in Damascus said it was a critical moment. He would be having serious and frank discussions with President Assad, he said, trying to persuade him to take bold steps to prove he was serious about peace. He will be pressing Mr Assad to make good on his earlier promise under the peace plan to withdraw his military and their heavy weapons back to barracks.

The Sudanese army says it will pull its troops out of the disputed border region of Abyei, which it unilaterally seized a year ago, forcing some 100,000 civilians to flee the area. A spokesman in Khartoum described the move as a good-will gesture a day ahead of talks with South Sudan in neighboring Ethiopia under African Union mediation.

A fire at a shopping mall in the Qatari capital Doha has killed at least 19 people. It's believed the fire started at a nursery. Caroline Hawley reports.

Official say the fire broke out at the Gympanzee nursery on the first floor of the vast shopping mall. Emergency services had to break through the roof to reach the children who'd been trapped when a staircase collapsed. But the firefighters were too late to save seven young girls and six boys who died with four of their teachers. Questions have been asked about safety procedures at the popular Italian-theme shopping mall, which builds itself as the largest family entertainment destination in Doha.

Some news just in. Fire has broken out at a campaign office in Cairo of the presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq. Television pictures showed a sizable blaze, but there's no indication so far of the cause. Details are still coming in. Mr Shafiq, the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, is one of the two men confirmed to fight a runoff election next month.

Two Israeli police officers have been convicted of negligent homicide over the death of a Palestinian man whom they abandoned by the side of the road even though he was seriously injured. The policemen had taken custody of Omar Abu Jariban who'd crashed the stolen car several weeks earlier. He'd been treated in hospital, but was still in a weak physical state. The senior of the two policemen ordered him to be dumped by the road where he died.

The family of Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor jailed for 33 years for working for the United States, have insisted he was wrongly convicted. They say they'll turn directly to Pakistan's top judge to allow a swift appeal. Dr Afridi was asked by the CIA to run a fake vaccination program in Abbottabad last year. The aim was to collect DNA samples to confirm that Osama Bin Laden and his family were living in a compound there. His sentencing has widened a serious diplomatic rift between Pakistan and the United States.

Security experts say they've uncovered malicious software which has been collecting private data in computers across the Middle East for several years. The international cyber security firm Kaspersky said the malware, dubbed Flame, collected huge amounts of sensitive information by taking screenshots, recording audio conversations and intercepting keyboard strokes. Here's Rory Cellan- Jones.

This attack appears designed to collect information rather than cause damage. The researchers say more than 600 specific targets have been hit, ranging from individuals to business and government systems. The malware is capable of recording audio from a computer's microphone or collecting screenshots, and then sending the material back to the attackers. Kaspersky says it believes the malware has been in use for at least two years, and it looks as though it may be state-sponsored.

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Luis Moreno Ocampo, has emerged as the frontrunner to become lead investigator at Fifa, the governing body of international football. He's due to leave the ICC next month. To restore an image tarnished by corruption, Fifa is to split its ethics committee into two parts: one investigative, one judicial. Reports say Fifa officials want Mr Ocampo to lead the investigations arm. He made his name in his native Argentina, prosecuting former military leaders.
