第23單元 十塊錢(qián)
Tom and his wife Marg went to the United State Fairevery year. Every year Tom said, "Marg, let's go ridethe airplane together."
湯姆和他太太每年都會(huì)去參加年度慶典。每年湯姆都會(huì)說(shuō):“瑪格,我們一起去坐飛機(jī)吧。”
And every year Marg would say, "I know, Tom, butthat airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars isten dollars."
每年瑪格都會(huì)說(shuō):“我知道,湯姆,可是坐飛機(jī)要花十塊錢(qián),十塊錢(qián)也是錢(qián)。”
This year Tom and Marg went to the fair.
今年湯姆和瑪格也去參加年度慶典。
Tom said, "Marg, I'm 71 years old. If I don't ride that airplane this year I may never get anotherchance. I might be dead by the next time the fair comes. Let's go ride the airplane." Margreplied, "Tom , that airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars."
湯姆說(shuō):“瑪格,我都71歲了,今年再不坐飛機(jī)去玩可能再也沒(méi)有機(jī)會(huì)了。下回年度慶典時(shí),搞不好我已經(jīng)翹辮子了。我們?nèi)プw機(jī)吧。”瑪格回答:“湯姆,坐飛機(jī)要花十塊錢(qián),十塊錢(qián)也是錢(qián)。”
The pilot overheard them. "Folks, I'll make you a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you canstay quiet for the entire ride and not day one word, I won't charge you, but if you say one wordit's ten dollars. "
駕駛員無(wú)意中聽(tīng)到他們的談話,便說(shuō):“兩位,我和你們做個(gè)交易。我?guī)銈儍蓚€(gè)飛一程,如果你們能全程保持安靜,一句話都不說(shuō),我就不收你們的錢(qián);但只要你們一開(kāi)口,就要付十塊錢(qián)。”
Tom and Marg agreed. The pilot does all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives. He does allhis tricks over again, but still not a word.
湯姆和瑪格決定接受這項(xiàng)提議。結(jié)果駕駛員盡其所能地翻來(lái)覆去,一會(huì)兒旋轉(zhuǎn)一會(huì)兒俯沖,所有花招盡皆出籠,但還是沒(méi)聽(tīng)到有人說(shuō)話。
They land and the pilot turns to Tom, "I did everything I could think of to get you to yell out,but you didn't."
降落后,駕駛員轉(zhuǎn)頭對(duì)湯姆說(shuō):“我想得出來(lái)可以讓你們大叫的招數(shù)都使過(guò)了,結(jié)果還是被你們打敗。”
Tom replied, "Well, I was gonna say something when Marg fell out, but ten dollars is tendollars."
湯姆回答:“其實(shí)瑪格摔出去的時(shí)候我是想開(kāi)口啦,可是十塊錢(qián)也是錢(qián)。”
