19 救人
A man had fallen between the rails in a subwaystation. Passers-by gathered rapidly around trying toget him out before the train went him over. Theywere all shouting “Give me your hand!”, but the manwould not reach up. The whistle of the train could beheard in the distance. Tom forced the passagethrough the crowed and leaned over the man.
一個(gè)人掉到了地鐵鐵軌中間,路過的人迅速圍過來,想在火車到來前把他救出來。他們都在大聲喊:“把你的手給我!”但這個(gè)人就是不把手伸出來。遠(yuǎn)處已經(jīng)可以聽到火車的低鳴了。湯姆從人群中擠過去,朝這個(gè)人探出身子。
“Friend,” he asked. “What is your profession?”
“朋友,”他說,“你的職業(yè)是什么?”
“I am in income tax inspector,” answered the man.
“我是個(gè)稅收檢查員,”這個(gè)人回答說。
“In that case,” said Tom, “take my hand.”
“如果那樣的話,”湯姆說,“抓住我的手!”
The man immediately grasped Tom’s hand tightly and was dragged to safety.
這人立即緊緊地抓住湯姆的手,他被拉到了安全的地方。
Tom turned to the amazed masses and declared, “never ask a tax man to GIVE you anything.You fools!”
湯姆轉(zhuǎn)頭看著驚訝的圍觀者說:“永遠(yuǎn)都不要讓稅務(wù)員‘給’你們什么東西,你們這些傻瓜!”
