在邊境車站
A train stopped at a French border station. Thepassengers opened their trunks, and waited for theinspection of their things. One of the passengers infirst-class carriage took a lot of boxes of cigarettesout of his trunk and wanted to put all of them intohis pockets.
一列火車停在法國邊境車站。旅客們都打開自己的皮箱,等待檢查。頭等車廂的一個(gè)乘客從他的皮箱里拿出許多盒香煙,想把它們?nèi)垦b進(jìn)自己的口袋。
When his pockets were already full of cigarettes and he could not put any more into them, hesaid to another man who was at the window:
他的口袋已經(jīng)裝滿了香煙,再也裝不進(jìn)去了,他就對坐在窗口的一個(gè)人說:
"Will you please take some of these boxes and put them into your pockets?"
“請你拿上幾盒煙放到你口袋里好嗎?”
"Why don't you leave them in your trunk?" asked the other passenger.
“你為什么不放在皮箱里呢?”那個(gè)乘客問道。
"Because I don't want to pay duty on them," answered the first passenger.
“因?yàn)槲也幌虢欢悺?rdquo;第一個(gè)乘客說。
"All right," said the passenger at the window. "Give them to me. But I must tell you now that Ishall not return them to you."
“好吧,”窗口的那個(gè)乘客說,“把它們給我。可是我現(xiàn)在必須告訴你,我不會還你了。”
"Why?"
“為什么?”
"Because I am a French customs officer."
“因?yàn)槲沂欠▏jP(guān)官員。”
