CNN News:別讓珊瑚礁消失

Coral is a living thing, but a lot of coral reefs are dying. Some species are considered endangered. Ken Nedimyer is trying to do something about that. Coral reefs are sometimes called rain forests of the seas, and Nedimyer is replanting these underwater rain forests and hoping to make sure they`ll be around for decades to come.

珊瑚具有生命，但是越來(lái)越多的珊瑚礁出現(xiàn)死亡現(xiàn)象。一些物種也面臨危險(xiǎn)。Ken Nedimyer正試圖做些什么來(lái)組織事態(tài)的惡化。珊瑚礁有時(shí)被稱為海洋里的熱帶雨林，而Nedimyer正在嘗試著重新種植這些被稱之為海洋熱帶雨林的生物，希望能在幾十年后仍然是一片生機(jī)。

I grew up diving in the Florida Keys, and it was just the most magical place. The coral reefs were so pretty, and I decided that`s what I wanted to do for a living, is dive on coral reefs.

我小時(shí)候經(jīng)常在佛羅里達(dá)群島的海里游泳，一直到長(zhǎng)大，那是一個(gè)充滿神奇色彩的地方。珊瑚礁非常漂亮，一群一群招搖在海底。于是我決定了我這一生要做的事，就是在有珊瑚礁的海里游泳。那真是太美了。

In an area where there`s live coral, there`s always more fish. Reefs provide protection for our coastal areas and recreational opportunities for millions of people.

在有珊瑚的地方就會(huì)有更多成群成群的魚(yú)環(huán)繞在周圍。珊瑚礁可以保護(hù)我們沿海地區(qū)的安全，同時(shí)還給人們提供了娛樂(lè)游玩的機(jī)會(huì)。

I was diving for 40 years, and over time I saw those coral reefs start to die. Coral reefs worldwide are in decline. If coral reefs die completely, coastal communities would be bankrupt, tourism would be virtually gone. A billion people in the world will be impacted. I started thinking, you know, how can we fix this problem?

我在這篇海域里游了將近40年的泳，隨著時(shí)間的變化，我發(fā)現(xiàn)這些珊瑚開(kāi)始出現(xiàn)了死亡現(xiàn)象。珊瑚群出現(xiàn)了世界范圍上的減少。如果珊瑚群全部死亡的話，沿海社區(qū)將會(huì)破產(chǎn)，旅游也將不復(fù)存在。將近十億的世界人口將受到影響。我開(kāi)始思考一個(gè)問(wèn)題，我怎樣做才能解決這個(gè)問(wèn)題。

My name is Ken Nedimyer and I grow, protect and restore coral reefs.

我叫Ken Nedimye，我種植，保護(hù)珊瑚群，讓珊瑚群重新煥發(fā)生機(jī)。

We developed a system that`s simple and it`s something that we can train others to do.

我們發(fā)展了一個(gè)系統(tǒng)，這個(gè)系統(tǒng)非常簡(jiǎn)單，也可以教別人做。

We start with a piece of coral this big and we hang it on a tree. And after about a year or two, it becomes this big. And then we cut the branches off, and we do it again.

我們這么大一片珊瑚為例，首先我們把他掛到樹(shù)上，過(guò)一兩年之后，它就會(huì)變成這么大。然后我們把它的分支砍下來(lái)再像之前一樣做一遍。

Ken`s Coral Nursery is one of the largest in the wider Caribbean. It`s 10 times larger than the others that are in existence.

Ken`s的珊瑚園是加勒比海地區(qū)最大的珊瑚養(yǎng)殖園之一。是其他珊瑚養(yǎng)殖園的十倍。

In 2003, we originally planted six corals here but now there`s over 3,000 growing in this area alone.

在2003年，我們起初在這里種植了六個(gè)珊瑚，但是現(xiàn)在光在這個(gè)地區(qū)就有3,000多個(gè)珊瑚了。

Before, I felt helpless watching it die. Now I think there`s hope. It`s not too late, everybody can help. And I see all those corals and all those fish. So it`s like this whole reef is coming back to life and making a difference is exciting.

之前我看到它們一批批死去特別無(wú)助，現(xiàn)在我已經(jīng)感覺(jué)到了希望。現(xiàn)在還不算太晚，每個(gè)人都可以加入進(jìn)來(lái)做一點(diǎn)貢獻(xiàn)。我看到了這里珊瑚又重新煥發(fā)了往日生機(jī)，魚(yú)群也慢悠悠的在水里遨游，這些無(wú)不都令人興奮。
