 Before he left Egypt to continue his campaign, he founded a new city by the sea and named it after himself: Alexandria.

在他撤離埃及繼續(xù)作戰(zhàn)之前，他在海邊建立了一座城市并按他自己的名字命名：亞歷山大。

It is still there today, and was for a long time one of the richest and most powerful cities in the world.

Only now did he march on Persia.

In the meantime1 the Persian king had assembled2 a huge army and was waiting for Alexander near ancient Nineveh at a place called Gaugamela.

與此同時(shí)波斯國王已集結(jié)了一支龐大的軍隊(duì)并在古城尼尼微附近的一個(gè)叫高加米拉的地方等待亞歷山大的到來。

He sent messengers3 ahead to meet Alexander and offered him half his kingdom and his daughter in marriage, if only he would agree not to fight.

他先向亞歷山大派出使者，答應(yīng)給他半個(gè)王國并將他的女兒許配給他，只要他同意不再打仗的話。

"If I were Alexander, I'd take it," said Alexander's friend, Parmenios.

"如果我是亞歷山大，我就接受這些條件。"亞歷山大的朋友帕爾梅尼奧當(dāng)時(shí)曾說

"And so would I, if I were Parmenios," was Alexander's reply.

亞歷山大的回答是：“我也會接受，如果我是帕爾梅尼奧的話。”

Half the world wasn't enough for Alexander.

半個(gè)世界遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)不能滿足亞歷山大。

With that, he defeated the last and greatest Persian army.

因此，他擊潰了最后、最大的一支波斯軍隊(duì)。

The king of Persia fled into the mountains, where he was assassinated4.

波斯王逃進(jìn)大山并在那里被人殺害。
