With halting steps I paced the streets, and passedthe sign of "The Crossed Harpoons"

我且行且息地在街上踱著,走過那塊"十字標(biāo)槍"的招牌...

but it looked too expensive and jolly there. Furtheron, from the bright red windows of the "Sword-FishInn," there came such fervent rays,

可是,看那樣子太花錢了,太快活了.我再踱過去,從那"劍魚客店"的光亮的紅窗格中,射出了那么強烈的光芒,

that it seemed to have melted the packed snow andice from before the house,

好象要把屋前那些堅實的冰雪都給融化了,

for everywhere else the congealed frost lay ten inches thick in a hard, asphaltic pavement,ratherweary for me,

因為在那條堅硬的瀝青人行道上,到處都結(jié)起十英寸厚的冰凍...我的腳一碰上那些燧石似的尖角,尤更覺得累乏,

when I struck my foot against the flinty projections, because from hard, remorseless service thesoles of my boots were in a most miserable plight.

我的靴跟經(jīng)過一番辛苦無情的服役后,那狀況已是悲慘之至了。

Too expensive and jolly, again thought I, pausing one moment to watch the broad glare in thestreet, and hear the sounds of the tinkling glasses within.

太花錢了,太快活了,我一面停將下來,看著街上的一片光輝,聽著店里叮當(dāng)作響的玻璃杯聲,一面又這么想著。

But go on, Ishmael, said I at last; don't you hear? get away from before the door; your patchedboots are stopping the way.

以實瑪利呀,走吧,我終于對自己說;你沒有聽見嗎?別停留在這屋門前呀;你這雙破靴是走不進(jìn)去的。

So on I went. I now by instinct followed the streets that took me waterward, for there,doubtless, were the cheapest, if not the cheeriest inns.

于是,我又繼續(xù)往前走.我現(xiàn)在本能地循著那些把我?guī)У胶＿叺慕值雷呷?因為,在那邊,即使沒有最稱心的客店,卻一定可以找到最最便宜的。
