Such dreary streets! Blocks of blackness, nothouses, on either hand, and here and there acandle, like a candle moving about in a tomb.

多么可怕的街道啊!兩旁只見(jiàn)一堆堆并不是房子的漆黑的東西,偶爾也看到一點(diǎn)燭光,直象是晃蕩在墳?zāi)估锏南灎T。

At this hour of the night, of the last day of the week,that quarter of the town proved all but deserted.

夜色這樣深沉,又逢上周末,這帶地方非常荒涼。

But presently I came to a smoky light proceedingfrom a low, wide building, the door of which stood invitingly open.

但是,隔了一會(huì)兒,我終于發(fā)現(xiàn)一線迷蒙的亮光從一座矮闊的屋子里射出來(lái),屋子的門(mén)象是邀人入內(nèi)似地開(kāi)著。

It had a careless look, as if it were meant for the uses of the public; so, entering, the firstthing I did was to stumble over an ash-box in the porch.

它顯出一種隨隨便便的樣兒,仿佛表示出它是供公眾使用的;因此,我就走了進(jìn)去,我碰到的第一樁事情是給門(mén)口一只垃圾箱絆了一個(gè)跟斗。

Ha! thought I, ha, as the flying particles almost choked me, are these ashes from thatdestroyed city, Gomorrah?

哈哈!當(dāng)那些揚(yáng)起的灰塵差不多要使我窒息的時(shí)候,我心里想:這些垃圾是從那被毀的城市蛾摩拉飛來(lái)的嗎?

But The Crossed Harpoons, and the The Sword-Fish?--this, then must needs be the sign of TheTrap.

但是,人家叫做十字標(biāo)槍,叫做劍魚(yú)客店...那么,這里倒該掛上一塊陷阱的招牌才是。

However, I picked myself up and hearing a loud voice within, pushed on and opened a second,interior door.

可是,我自己爬了起來(lái),聽(tīng)到里面有一陣刺耳的聲音,便直沖進(jìn)去,推開(kāi)了第二道內(nèi)門(mén)。
