大家都扔掉帽子加緊抽，不久，就聽到大家的肺部發(fā)出那種特殊的喘氣聲，說明大家都非常緊張地使出了最大的力氣。

“說起來，諸位先生，掃甲板，在海上可是一件日常工作，除了刮大風，本來每天晚上都要這樣做。據(jù)說甚至在船只實際上已快要下沉的時候也要這樣做。這個呀，諸位先生，就是海上的不變的習俗，也是水手們天生愛好整潔的習慣；其中有些人如果不先洗臉是不會心甘情愿地讓溺死的。不過，這種打掃的差使，在所有的船只中，如果船上有小廝的話，向來都是小廝們的份內(nèi)事。
