Even now, when the boats pulled upon this whale, and perilously drew over his swaying flukes, and the lances were darted into him, they were followed by steady jets from the new made wound, which kept continually playing, while the natural spout-hole in his head was only at intervals, however rapid, sending its affrighted moisture into the air. From this last vent no blood yet came, because no vital part of him had thus far been struck. His life, as they significantly call it, was untouched.

As the boats now more closely surrounded him, the whole upper part of his form, with much of it that is ordinarily submerged, was plainly revealed. His eyes, or rather the places where his eyes had been, were beheld. As strange misgrown masses gather in the knot-holes of the noblest oaks when prostrate, so from the points which the whale's eyes had once occupied, now protruded blind bulbs, horribly pitiable to see. But pity there was none. For all his old age, and his one arm, and his blind eyes, he must die the death and be murdered, in order to light the gay bridals and other merry-makings of men, and also to illuminate the solemn churches that preach unconditional inoffensiveness by all to all. Still rolling in his blood, at last he partially disclosed a strangely discolored bunch or protuberance, the size of a bushel, low down on the flank.

這幾只小艇現(xiàn)在把它包圍得更緊了，它的整個(gè)上半身，和本來(lái)就已露在水面上的部分，都教人看得清清楚楚。它那雙眼睛，或者不如說(shuō)是在那個(gè)長(zhǎng)有眼睛的地方，也看得到了。好象是錯(cuò)長(zhǎng)在枯朽了的老橡樹(shù)的大木節(jié)里的奇怪的塊體似的，所以在那曾經(jīng)是長(zhǎng)著鯨眼的地方，現(xiàn)在暴出兩只什么也看不見(jiàn)的大泡泡來(lái)，教人看了非常可憐。不過(guò)，也沒(méi)有什么好可憐的。盡管它年紀(jì)很大，只有獨(dú)臂，又是瞎眼，它卻是該死該殺，該去照亮人類(lèi)的快活的婚禮或者其它各種尋歡作樂(lè)的場(chǎng)面，也該去把莊嚴(yán)的教堂照得金碧輝煌，好讓它永遠(yuǎn)向大家傳布那絕對(duì)無(wú)害的福音。這時(shí)，它還在血泊里翻滾著，最后半側(cè)著身子，在側(cè)腹下端露出了一大團(tuán)或者是一個(gè)大疙瘩，色澤奇特，大小約有三十六公升。
