Oprah Winfrey galvanised a politically charged Golden Globes ceremony with a speech that called on Hollywood to ensure the wave of actresses who have gone public with tales of sexual harassment are the last to face such mistreatment.

The appeal by the businesswoman, actress and TV host capped a night where show business leading lights wore black gowns to demonstrate against sexual harassment, turning the annual film and television awards ceremony into a star-studded protest on gender inequality and racism.

The speech was rapturously received in the room and on social media, with many people urging Ms Winfrey to run for the White House in 2020. “It’s up to the people,” her longtime partner, Stedman Graham, told the Los Angeles Times. “She would absolutely do it.”

The attention to her speech and speculation about her future boosted shares in Weight Watchers, the weight loss company in which Ms Winfrey holds a near-10 per cent stake. By lunchtime in New York the stock was up almost 13 per cent at $52.94. Ms Winfrey bought her stake in 2015 at $6.79 per share.

Although Sunday’s ceremony was peppered with references to the scandal that has engulfed the industry since movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was sacked following multiple allegations of assault — host Seth Meyers opened the event saying “for the male nominees in the room tonight, this will be the first time in three months it won’t be terrifying to hear your name read out loud” — it was Ms Winfrey who stirred the audience with her call to arms.

“I want all the girls watching here and now to know that a new day is on the horizon,” she said in her acceptance speech for a Cecil B DeMille lifetime achievement award.

”When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say, ‘Me too’ again.”
