The hound followed true to the scent, pointing to the same spot on the shore;

獵犬緊跟著小鹿的氣味，朝河灘上的小鹿奔去；

his master, anxious to meet him, had run at full speed, and was now coming up at the same CRItical moment.

獵犬的主人急于攔住它，全速奔跑著，也在這關(guān)鍵時刻追到了。

Will the dog listen to his voice? or can the hunter reach him in time to seize and control him?

獵犬會聽他的招呼嗎？獵人會及時趕上控制住他的獵犬嗎？

A shout from the bank told that the fawn had passed out of sight into the forest.

岸上有人喊，小鹿已經(jīng)跑進(jìn)森林，蹤跡不見了。

At the same instant, the hound, as he touched the land, felt the hunter's strong arm clutching his neck.

同一時刻，獵犬一踏上陸地就被主人強有力的手臂掐住了脖子。

The worst was believed to be over; the fawn was leaping up the mountain side, and its enemy was restrained.

最可怕的事情終于沒有發(fā)生；小鹿順著山坡向上跳躍，它的敵人受到了控制。

The other dogs, seeing their leader cowed, were easily managed.

其他的狗,看到他們的領(lǐng)袖被嚇倒,很容易管理。

A number of persons, men and boys, dispersed themselves through the woods in search of the little creature, but without success;

一些人分頭進(jìn)入森林尋找小鹿，但是沒找到；

they all returned to the village, reporting that the fawn had not been seen.

他們返回村里，報告說沒找到小鹿。

Some thought that after its fright had passed it would return of its own accord.

人們想小鹿自己會回來的。

It wore a pretty collar with its owner's name engraved upon it, so that it could be easily known from any other fawn that might be straying about the woods.

小鹿戴著漂亮的項圈，上面刻著主人的名字，這樣就可以輕松地從任何其他林子識別迷失的小鹿。

Before many hours had passed, a hunter presented himself to the lady whose pet the little creature had been, and showed a collar with her name upon it.

過了些天，一個獵人來到了曾經(jīng)喂養(yǎng)小鹿的太太那里，出示了一個項圈，上面刻著她的名字。

He said that he was out hunting in the morning, and saw a fawn in the distance.

他說，早上去打獵，遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)看到一只小鹿。

The little pet, instead of bounding away, as he expected, moved toward him; he took aim, fired, and shot it through the heart.

他以為小鹿會離開，沒想到卻朝他走了過來；他瞄準(zhǔn)，開槍，射穿了小鹿的心臟。
